Hot dog! People, you know, a gentleman asked me last night what I was doing. I said, 'Well, sir, on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, I don't do anything'. He says, 'Well, what do you do on Thursday, Friday and Saturday?' I says, 'Why, I rest'. He says, 'You do anything on Sunday?' 'Oh, yes sir, that's my busiest day'. He says, 'What are you doing on Sunday?' I says, 'Getting ready to do nothing on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday'. Ha-hah! - Uncle Dave Macon, Wouldn't Give Me Sugar in My Coffee

« on: December 17, 2013, 05:34:34 PM »
Hi all

I just came across Dom Flemons' article on Gus Cannon's "Can You Blame The Colored Man", and thought I'd share it.

http://www.oxfordamerican.org/articles/2013/dec/16/oa83-can-you-blame-gus-cannon/

Here are some of the songs mentioned in the article:

"Can You Blame The Coloured Man?" starts at around 2:20.

The music starts at 1:44.

Cheers

Dom Flemons of the CCD has an interesting essay in the Oxford American this issue. It's on Gus Cannon, Booker T. Washington, and generally how black musicians subverted minstrel songs and tropes.

Thought it might be of interest.

You probably missed the previous mention:

Thus, a merge is probably in order.
