My loathings are simple: stupidity, oppression, crime, cruelty, soft music.

I saw Screamin' Jay back in the day, at one of those Motown reviews where a whole raft of artists appear for about 3 songs apiece.  Jay's acted started with a coffin being wheeled on stage, from which he jumped out in an outrageous outfit and started singing.  They just don't make 'em like that anymore.  It's worth checking out his wikipedia bio.  Among many other fascinating facts, he left behind "approximately 75 offspring..."

It's also worthwhile to revisit a DVD of "Mystery Train," a goofball movie by Jim Jarmusch that was filmed in Memphis. Screamin' Jay plays the role of a hotel night manager. He doesn't have a bone in his nose, and he doesn't sing, but he does wear a suit of a color I've never seen before.

I'll second Lyle's recommendation--and add that if you like this kind of film, there's also Jim Jarmusch's "Night On Earth." No musicians in it that I can recall, but the same format, with some very funny scenes.

Got the name, still workin' on the licks!

No discussion of Screaming Jay would be complete without a listen to his rendition of Cole Porter's  "I Love Paris".
  It rather defies description  ;)

If you can't use his proper name, can't you call him Carl Perkins Jr. or something?

(Love that movie.)
