He [Ted Bogan] was playing with picks that you put on your fingers and I didn't like that as an accompaniment, so I made him throw them away and I told him I would play the lead and he would play the accompaniment - Carl Martin on hooking up with Ted Bogan (Blues & Rhythm #218 Stompin' In Knox County)
Yeah, always liked it, great melody, and there ain't a lot of people playing it.
Phil, thanks! Where do I sign?
Everyone really has done a nice job and as John said, it is so cool to hear the variety of material all in one thread. I don't know that it would be quite the same for Peetie Wheatstraw's birthday. (Sorry, Peetie fans, I like him too.)
Johnm, Mary Don't You Weep is one of my favourites by anybody, and you've just added another great version.
Folks I think we all did something fairly special there for MJH's birthday. I've listen to all the contributions one after another, several times, and I doubt if you could hear such a high calibre collection of Hurt tunes at any gig anywhere...so Weenies done good! From Berlin, Germany to Birmingham, Washington State, from hymns to hookers, hats or no hats we certainly did go all over the map!
Sincere thanks folks for making this fly. The response took me completely by surprise. There is gold in them there Weenie hearts!
A final nod before I go to my mentor JohnM (I don't think he will mind ...too much ) but I believe I'm right in saying that "Mary,Don't you Weep" is John's Weenie debut post and is something of a landmark event! It is a beautiful piece!
Thank you Back Porch for your kind words! Now to deal with my hang over...
Rev. Davis's birthday is April 30th. I think it'd be nice to play a little something.
Agreed!
So get ready, people. Limber up them fingers.
Somebody should start the thread!
May I then suggest the Honourable Mr. O'Muck? As a former student of the Reverand, he would be a natural candidate IMHO. That is, of course, if he's willing to go through this.
It is that time of year again! A month to go to Mississippi John Hurt's birthday. I'm dusting down the camcorder and getting myself organised to have something to post on the big day : March 8th.
Last year was such a great party that realistically it would be hard to match! However, if you have the time over the coming month and you want to help mark the day it would be greatly appreciated if you join me for the Back Porch Party for MJH.
They say "Third time is the Charm"! Here's hoping! Anything close to last year would be mighty!
All the best
Colm

This is so exciting! I absolutely agonised over which song to do, I really did! It has been really fun playing around with some of his songs (which I've surmised I really can't ever hope to play to any degree of proficiency) I'm kinda happy with what I just recorded. I really hope some others will join in, too
