One of my regrets is I never did get to record Scrapper and Shirley playing together, and they played very, very well together. - Art Rosenbaum talks about Scrapper Blackwell and Shirley Griffith, Big Road Blues radio show, January 2010

Aplogies if i post a repeat. This is one of my favourites:

And other times I think that you ought to be buried alive

I think the guy is one of these interplanetary world musicians, the kind of person they talk about .... where the world is sound and everything is resonating. He?s one of those guys. There?s only a few.

We are told to our faces often that though our quartet is one of the best that has been heard up here, they would like us better if we would "play the Nigger" - their own words - more...  every day we are made to understand that if there was less refinement about us and more fool, we would do better...  When I have about three persons ask for the [spirituals] and about four score ask that we dance and sing songs which tell of Negroes stealing chickens, I make no pretensions to try to please. - Tuskegee Quartet member Isaac Fisher, in a letter to Dr. Booker T. Washington, c. 1900

...traditional musicians, too, often try to "get it down just like" an admired player picks a particular tune. This is not slavish imitation for its own sake but rather a passionate desire to get at the very sinews of the style, based on the realization that the impact of traditional music depends on detail and an evocative context... - Art Rosenbaum, Old-Time Mountain Banjo

[F]olk styles tend to be conservative and one doesn't have to move the earth in order to express oneself within a tradition. A little personal innovation goes a long way in this music and one needn't go overboard in the direction of technical virtuosity, self-consciously weird harmonic effects, or jazz-inspired no-holds-barred improvisations on the theme... - Art Rosenbaum, Old-Time Mountain Banjo

Yes, those are great quotes from Art Rosenbaum.  And I believe that what is most interesting or striking sounding in the music often comes from taking a technical shortcut that has an interesting color associated with it--so that the sound is a by-product of how the playing is done, and not the goal of the technical choice.  As strong as this music is, it is surprisingly fragile in a lot of ways, especially harmonically.  Players who can go out harmonically and still sound convincingly in the style, like Robert Pete Williams or Walter Davis, are in a tiny minority.
