We used to go to different people's houses, you know. In those days I mean they could hear music and - if somebody could play an instrument, man, they would get up at night, from one o'clock; and they'd fix food and they'd have drinks and they'd stay up till five, six o'clock in the morning and give you money. It wasn't a dance but a serenade; we'd go from house to house. In those days there wasn't too much things like juke boxes, high fidelity sound, wasn't nothing like that then; and whenever somebody could play and could play well, he was considered as somebody; he could go anywhere and he had it made, you know? - Baby Doo Caston, on playing music in Natchez in the 1920s, interview with Jeff Todd Titon

Side Street Steppers Live! on MusicFilm.TV

MusicFilm.TV is a local Memphis group that is trying to put Memphis music on the global map via an internet TV forum.  A chance meeting at a coffee shop put us in touch, and you can view the results at the link below.  My band, the Side Street Steppers, performs three numbers in this clip - Hesitation Blues, Dallas Rag and an old-time medley, Twin Sisters > Greasy Coat.

It takes a minute to load, but it's worth the wait.  The band is

Tennessee Tom C. - guitar, mandolin
Ms. Vera Victoria - ukulele, banjo
Nathan Breckenridge - double bass
Emily Breckenridge - percussion
Will Grover - Banjo guitar, guitar
Jennifer Grover - fiddle

Good wholesome family fun - three married couples who don't own TVs making music in the old time way.  (Nevermind the TV cameras and bright lights...)

Very cool Tom - I like it! Thanks for the update - your band is expanding and how cool to be playing with other couples/friends!  The only thing I'm disappointed in is that you didn'
t invite all us weenies to your wedding!   :P
