Uncredited musicians in Charley Chase short
« on: May 25, 2010, 08:24:31 AM »
This may seem like an odd question, but bear with me.
In the Charley Chase 1936 short, On The Wrong Trek, there is a scene in a vagrants' road camp featuring two black musicians, a guitarist with a kazoo in his mouth and a drummer equipped with a home made set constructed from oil drums, pans, tin cans etc.
These boys really cook. Does anyone know who they are/were?
The film is available on DVD, largely because it features a cameo appearance by Laurel and Hardy, who are on-screen for all of 13 seconds. The Wiki entry for the film doesn't mention the musicians at all.
You should try to see this, it's by far the best part of a what is actually a rather laboured and unfunny production. In the UK, it is on the Laurel and Hardy DVD Vol 13 Sons of the Desert, probably similarly available elsewhere in the world. Maybe you can rent it or something.

Hi Stumblin: Not an odd question at all. I wish that I knew where to find the answer. It was a Hal Roach Studios production, so the production records may very well be extant somewhere. Perhaps one or more of the Weenie counterparts that are focused on early film and/or actors might be the place(s) to ask.

IMDB list a mass of named "bit part" performers, maybe the pair are amongst them. Or maybe not......

Hi Stumblin: Since we're somewhat OT, I thought it would be appropriate to mention the Dutch "Documentary Orchestra," The Beau Hunks (named after the Laurel & Hardy short). They perform in various configurations and have recreated the music of Leroy Shield, who wrote much of the sound track music for the Hal Roach films, such as Our Gang/Little Rascals, Laurel & Hardy, etc. It's a fascinating story. They've also done a CD of the music of Raymond Scott and even have a DVD out. Ton Van Bergeyk is a sometimes member. Here are a few links:

I have a couple of their CDs as well as a DVD. Highly recommended if you're looking for a change of pace from our favorite genre.
