« on: February 04, 2010, 01:50:41 AM »
Hello.
Please, could you help me to find the lyrics of this religious song recorded many years ago by Fred McDowell and wife?

Many thanks.

Marco.

If you post your attempt at the lyrics, I'm certain that fellow Weenies will help with any sections you are are unsure of, this is the usual process here.

Lester, the usual form here is that you post your attempt at the lyrics and folk will then pitch in and help.

I just love Mississippi Fred McDowell and this is up there with his greatest songs.
I've been working on these lyrics for a while now & I think I just about have it. There's a couple of phrases (in italics) that I'm having trouble with though.
The lyrics are from his live "London Calling" album, which I think was originally called "Live at the Mayfair".

MISSISSIPPI FRED McDOWELL
STANDING AT THE BURYING GROUND
FROM THE ALBUM ?LONDON CALLING?

Lord, there?s ten thousand people by you,
Standing at one burying ground,
Lord, there?s ten thousand people, baby,
Standing at the burying ground.
Just the city under, take her, let my baby down.

Lord, the church bells ringing,
The hearse was driving slow,
Lord, the church bells ringing, baby,
The hearse was driving slow,
You know it hurts my heart, to see my baby go.

Lord, I looked down the road, baby,
Just as far as I could see,
Lord, I looked down the road,
Just as far as I could see,
I had a ??, ?? baby, calling me.

Don?t come here running,
Screaming, screaming, crying,
Don?t you come here running, baby,
Oh Lordy, screaming, crying,
You know you gotta hold me there, as long as I got mine.

Lord, take me ?fore you wake up,
Baby, hitch me as you go,
Anytime you turn baby you know, he might be ready to go.

Please remember me, Oh Lordy, when I?m gone,
Lord remember me baby, honey, when I?m gone.

Hi Malcolm.

In the first unclear part, I seem to hear:

"Just to see the undertaker, Lord, let my baby down."

Hopefully others can help with the rest.

Cheers

Pan

I hear it differently - word here and there throughout and three lines, last of verse 1,3 and 4.

Lord, there?s ten thousand people
Standing at one burying ground,
Lord, there?s ten thousand people, baby,
Standing at one burying ground.
Just as the undertaker, Lord, let my baby down

Lordy church bells ringing,
The hearse was driving slow,
Lord, the church bells ringing, baby,
The hearse was driving slow,
You know it hurts my heart, to see my baby go.

Lord, I looked down the road, baby,
Just as far as I could see,
 I looked down the road,
Just as far as I could see,
I had a gang of women Lord they been following me

Don?t come here running,
Honey screaming screaming crying,
Don?t you come here running, baby,
Oh Lordy, screaming crying,
You know you got a home baby, as long as I got mine.

Lord, take me ?fore you wake up,
Baby, hitch me as you go,
Anytime you turn baby you know, he might be ready to go.

Please remember me, Oh Lordy, when I?m gone,
Lord remember me baby, honey, when I?m gone.

Fred McDowell Lyrics Diving Duck
« Reply #11 on: February 06, 2015, 02:05:15 PM »
Hey guys!

A friend of mine is going crazy trying to figure out what "I got a woman in... I got three wristbands" may specifically refer to in the Fred McDowell song Diving Duck Blues from the Heritage of the Blues album. It seems like McDowell is older on this album and brags about his luck with women over the years throughout the entire album- we figured that the "three wristbands of women" is simply a quantity thing. HOWEVER, I'm really not 100% convinced that the phrase we've identified is correct! Anyone think they can give us a hand, or more literally another pair of ears? :)

This is the song:

I'm really only interested in the opening lines-- my buddy and I are obsessing on this "wristband" thing!

I've got a girl in Germany oh...

I've got three in Spain.

 :P  pre-wristband.   ;D

In fact we've got a thread somewhere on mis-hearing lyrics that is quite entertaining.  There are some good ones.

You're welcome --- and we all know what you mean - it's tough to listen fresh again, once you've gotten an idea in your head!
