It was music which had been brought up from the Mississippi delta by migrating post World War II Negroes and hardened and toughened and electrified and amplified to suit the dance halls and mean streets of Chicago, and it thrilled me to the very depths of my soul. To a dissolute white kid from the mean streets of a concrete housing estate, this music seemed tailored to echo the way that I felt - Fred McCormick on discovering The Best of Muddy Waters (on Pye International), in a world of Cliff Richard and Helen Shapiro

Del Rey workshop, Sat. May 2, Berkeley CA
« on: April 17, 2009, 11:29:06 AM »
Saturday, May 2 from 11 am to 12:30 pm
Master class for guitarists with Del Rey
in Berkeley California, near Ashby & College

Probably all you Weenies know about Del Rey already, but in case not:
Here's your opportunity to learn from the fingerstyle guitarist who Acoustic Guitar called "one of the greatest modern players of the metal-bodied resonator guitar".  Boogie woogie bass lines combined with syncopated melodies based on piano tunes, and the playing of Memphis Minnie, Rosetta Tharp, and Sam Chatmon in both standard and open tunings are her specialties. She'll answer your questions, as well as show you techniquies and characteristic pieces.  Bring a guitar -- it doesn't have to be a resonator guitar -- and a recording device.  Note:  this is NOT a slide guitar workshop (Del doesn't play slide guitar).  This workshop will be most accessible to accomplished finger pickers, but everyone is welcome!
Del Rey is an experienced and patient teacher who has been a perennial favorite at Centrum's Country Blues Week, Puget Sound Guitar Workshop, California Coast Music Camp and many other music camps.
Class size is limited.  Tuition is $40.  For reservations and directions, please email Suzy Thompson:  suzy@ericandsuzy.com

Del Rey's website:  http://www.hobemianrecords.com
Del Rey and Suzy Thompson will play at Freight & Salvage (Berkeley) on Fri. May 1, and at Don Quixote's (Felton - Santa Cruz area) on Sun. May 3.
