Arthur Petties, Freddie Spruell, Romeo Nelson, Doug Suggs -- these are only a few of the blues singers known on record and in discographies to blues enthusiasts, whose rediscovery has not been followed by recording sessions, for they have forgotten all they knew, and hear with disbelief the records they made as young men. - "The Future of the Blues", Blues Off the Record, Paul Oliver

Listened again to that line repeatedly to the point of dizziness and my verdict is: too close to call.  :P

I think I'm hearing "violin" now but it could still be "version" (voyshun). And I can't say whether it' s "a" or "the" Mississippi coon. Moot, I guess, except for scholarly purposes, since this probably isn't a line you'd want to sing in performance.

Hi all,
This is another new merged lyric thread.  As per usual, titles on posts other than the first in the merged thread have not been changed.
All best,

Honey babe let the deal go down
« Reply #62 on: June 12, 2010, 06:59:06 AM »
Hi, I wonder if the collected wisdom of Weenie can help...I am working on the Sheiks' Honey babe, but I am not sure I have the lyrics quite right.  Here is what I have...I'd welcome any corrections...thanks in advance, Paul

Honey babe, please let the deal go down
Honey babe, please let the deal go down
We can get the money, walk on down through town

I?m a stranger to you and you?re a stranger to me
I?m a stranger to you and you?re a stranger to me
If you would be my babe, how happy I would be

I have travelled until (I), travelled the whole world through
I have travelled until (I) travelled the whole world through
I ain?t found a woman. Looked as sweet to me as you

Now honey babe you got me troubled in mind
Now honey babe you got me troubled in mind
You keep me worried and bothered all the time

(inst)

I ain?t mean, I?m good as I can be
I ain?t mean, I?m good as I can be
Tell me sweet babe what thoughts you plan on me

Tell me sweet babe, what FAULT YOU FIND OF me

Just heard "The Jazz Fiddler" on the Juke and think I heard something:

In the oft-repeated verse:

Boys, there's something you never have seen.
A man playin' jazz on a violin.
It's too bad, it's too, listen to that old violin.
A quick finger and a shakin' bow.
A super heel and a tickle toe.
It's too bad, it's too bad.

I think it's supposed to be "A SUPPLE heel and a tickle toe," and Walter is pronouncing it "souple" instead of "supple".

Mississippi Sheiks "Baby Keeps Stealin' Lovin' On Me"
« Reply #66 on: January 09, 2012, 11:51:14 AM »
Here's what I have, there is quite a bit that I'm unable to get.  I've also been listening to the Walker's Corbin Ramblers version which has a cool blip in the timing.  I haven't put all the repeated refrains.

My baby keeps stealing that lovin? on me
I?m gonna catch her soon
My baby keeps stealing that lovin? on me
I?m Gonna catch her just soon as you?re born

????
What made her .. there I sure don?t know
My baby keep stealing lovin? on me
I?m gonna catch her soon.

Well She don?t steal silver
She don?t steal gold
Just hangs around the baker shop, steal jelly roll
My baby keeps stealing that lovin? on me
I?m gonna catch her soon

I was settin in the corner just as still as a lamb
???? Back door slam
My baby keeps stealing that lovin? on me
I?m gonna catch her soon

You better do your stealing while stealing is grand (?)
It will be all over when I get my mojo hand
My baby keeps stealing that lovin? on me
I?m gonna catch her soon

Many thanks,
Suzy

Hi Suzy,
Here's what I'm hearing:

  In that first lyrics break,
                                       I really pay the house
                                       I really buy the clothes
                                       What make her steal
                                       Now, I sure don't know

  In the later one,
I was settin' in the corner
Just as still as a lamb
Wasn't too still to hear the
                                       Back door slam

All best,
Johnm

Hi John & Suzy -

I am (maybe) hearing "I already pay the house, I already buy the clothes"  (already pronounced as 'ready ).  Which might make reasonable logical sense.

Hi Peter,
I like your interpretation better than mine--it makes more sense.  Well done!

Could it be, that the repeated refrain ends "just as SURE as you were born"?

Cheers

I just listened a couple of times and like John's first impression, I hear:

I really pay the house
I really buy the clothes

I'm hearing an "L" sound in there. "Really" could be used to amplify or intensify what's being expressed here and doesn't necessarily have to make more (or less) sense to us than 'ready. But in the end, it's a tough call.

I agree with Pan, definitely SURE as you're born.

I also hear "really" clearly in the first verse. Plus, the first line is "I really pay the house rent" - Walter swallows it a bit but it's there.

Here's an amended version, incorporating all the suggestions.  I'm going with "really" rather than "ready".  I'm happy to incorporate further suggestions, but I think we pretty much have it.  Thanks,
Suzy

Baby Keeps Stealin? Sugar On Me
Mississippi Sheiks

My baby keeps a-stealing lovin? on me
I?m gonna catch her soon
My baby keeps a-stealing  lovin? on me
I?m gonna catch her just sure as you?re born
I really pay the house , I really buy the clothes
What make her steal, now, I sure don?t know
My baby keep a-stealing lovin? on me, I?m gonna catch her soon.

My baby keeps a-stealing  lovin? on me, I?m gonna catch her soon
My baby keeps a-stealing  lovin? on me, I?m gonna catch her just sure as you?re born
Well she don?t steal silver, she don?t steal gold
Mess around the baker shop and steal  jelly roll
My baby keeps a-stealing  lovin? on me, I?m gonna catch her soon

Oh step on it!

My baby keeps a-stealing  lovin? on me, I?m gonna catch her soon
My baby keeps a-stealing  lovin? on me, I?m gonna catch her just as sure as you?re born

Wasn?t too still to hear the back door slam
My baby keeps a-stealing lovin? on me, I?m gonna catch her soon

My baby keeps a-stealing  lovin? on me, I?m gonna catch her soon

Thanks Suzy for posting the completed version. I took the liberty of merging this into an earlier MS Sheiks lyrics thread, hope that's OK.
I also set it up on weeniepedia, surprisingly we had no MS Sheiks lyrics on there until now: http://weeniecampbell.com/wiki/index.php?title=Baby_Keeps_Stealing_Lovin%27_On_Me

Stefan needs to do a Sheiks discog...  ;)
