Another new Fraulini Angelina
« on: April 04, 2007, 02:50:23 PM »
This arrived on Friday in time for the EBA Gloucester weekend.

I'm stunned by the the sound. My main problem over the weekend was keeping it out of the hands of Michael Roach, who happens to be a fellow lefty.

After a couple of more days the novelty has still not worn off, can't put it down. Now need to build up my 12-string repertoire. All suggestions in addition to W.McTell (who I've been mad about since about 1963).

I can only say that Todd Cambio catches that old Stella sound to perfection.

Blueshome:

As for a 12 string tune, don't forget "I Ain't Givin' Nobody None"

Good for you, Phil!  I look forward to hearing you play some numbers on your new twelve-string the next time I see you.  Some Dad Nelson tunes might sound really good, and you could work in some kazoo, too!
All best,
Johnm

Hey, blueshome,

Congratulations on the new insturment!  I for one would love to hear what woods are used, pin bridge or tailpiece, neck profile, and any other information you'd care to pass along.

Thanks for the song suggestions. John, kazoo makes me shudder, but worth a try.

dj, it's spruce top with white oak body. Todd's standard neck profile (great!), and I have a tailpiece. The slot/stud tailpiece is a work of art in itself and is even left-handed. Strung 13-66 with unison 3rd strings.

Main problem at the moment is where to keep my guitars as this has again alerted Mrs.Blueshome to the fact that there are a few.

Glad it arrived, Phil. Sounds fantastic.

What about a few pictures for us to drool over?  Expect you'll be bringing it down when you next visit.  (Has anybody written a book called "How to steal a 12-string without the owner noticing"?!!??!!)

See you,
M.

OK Michael, photo attached.  If you steal the guitar you'll have to have a hand transplant to become sinistral.

Send me a personal email and I'll fix to bring it down to Rye.

Congratulations, Phil! All I can say is hubba hubba.

As for tunes to try on it, probably the next person down the list after McTell for me would be Leadbelly. And I don't hear too many people playing great Leadbelly blues these days...

I must just add that having been part of the delivery chain for this guitar, Todd has made a really nice instrument and it sounds as good as it looks :)

The only downside was that as Phil plays it lefthanded (maybe he will get better?) we all had to wait to hear it played properly...  :P

Wow, more stunning work from Todd, congrats Phil - damn, it seems I cannot get out in my shop to build anymore, I may have to order one of Todd's guitars myself!  What a great niche Todd and glad to see you getting some orders from the UK!

It was certainly a fun one to build.  The left handed thing was always in the back of my head, especially when it came to things like putting in the side dots, making the tailpiece and doing the set up.  Trying my best to do a Libba Cotten impersonation, I knew it was going to sound good, but it was certainly frustrating not being able to play it.  I can't wait to hear Phil put it through its courses.
I'm always happy when people choose to go with white oak.  It's such a great tonewood but unfortunately most folks don't give it serious consideration.
I'm currently obsessed with building a 9 string.  I should have it singing by next week.  I'll post some pics and a description when it's done.
Thanks again Phil!

Damn! I forgot about that.  What's it like living as a mirror image, Phil?

I'll be in touch.

Congratulations, this guitar looks wonderful, and as far as I know they sounds equally wonderful.
I bought second hand a 12-string Jumbo Stella copy (like Fraulini's Francesca) a few months ago, an unhoped lucky find here in France, and I enjoy a lot this guitar.

Now my main problem is to find the strings. In the shops here, gauges like .064, .066 or .070 are inexistent, and single strings are very (very !) expensive (a custom set will cost around 30-35 Euros  :o). I know that Dell Arte and La Bella have strings set for these guitars, but with a double octave on the 6th course, that I don't like very much.
So I've ordered a custom set from FQMS.COM who offers a large choice of singles strings (D'Addario).
I didn't find another store which offers such a choice, except juststrings.com , but international shipping cost is $35 for any size order.
So my question is mainly for those who live in Europe : where do you buy your strings for these guitars ?

Please note that English isn't my mother tongue, so my apologies for the mistakes.

Thanks,
Nicolas

I always use Newtones and know they are happy to knock up the odd mix and match set, might be worth an email if you know what you want.

I have asked Todd Cambio the same question about strings and he mentioned  La Bella. I have used Newtone's .013 12-string set, but they don't have the .066 bottom string which helps when tuning down to B.

I'm in the process of putting a string set together with LaBella which would be the same strings that I put on my new guitars:
course 1: .013/.013
course 2: .017/.017
course 3: .026/.026
course 4: .017/.038
course 5: .022/.048
course 6: .026/.066
I will hopefully have some of these sets in a couple of weeks and I'd like to make them available at a reasonable price.  Send me an email if you're interested.  My contact info is at my website, www.fraulini.com.

Just played natterjack's Fraulini at Weenieguernsey - what a fine guitar! Next year, Phil, you must bring yours for a show-and-tell!

Just a note to say that I had the pleasure of meeting and briefly jamming with Todd Cambio last weekend in Brighton,UK.

He made a minor adjustment to the Angelina and had with him a large bodied 12 destined for a famous UK musician which sounded great.

Having had my guitar for a few weeks now I can only endorse the quality of its workmanship and the great sound which Todd achieves.

Hi all,
I had occasion last week-end when I was in the U.K. to see Phil's Fraulini Angelina, and just wanted to report what a spectacular job Todd did in its construction.  It is beautiful both in appearance and sound.  I have played some wonderful old Stella 12-strings, including John C.'s and one Nick Perls owned, and this brand new guitar is in a class with the best that I have seen.  For a brand new 12-string guitar, it is unrivaled in my experience--I've never seen one that came close to it.  It plays very easily, too, though there was not a whole lot I could do, playing right-handed and upside down (Phil is a lefty).
It was great to see Phil and other friends from the EBA, and the one-day version of the Stamford Guitar Festival was great fun, too.  It was nice to see and hear Nick Katzman after many years, as well as his playing partner, Thomasina Winslow, who sings and plays really well.  Australian Jeff Lang closed the evening concert with a set of his original material, played with an interesting personal approach.
All best,
Johnm

Speaking of Todd's beautiful guitars, someone over at UMGF is selling a nice 6-string, at a very nice price:
