Canned Heat Blues - uncle bud mp3

It ain't hi-fi but here it is. A little shocked to realize this was recorded three years ago. Note clam in the middle that I deftly turn into a break (!).

Hi UB:
Very nice, very listenable. But you can't do TJ w/o having drank lotsa whiskey!

I don't think I ever thought of that as a clam!  I still love your take on this, especially the 'heavy time'.

Yeah, sitting on the I chord was one of those "what the hell am I playing again?" moments.

As long as I don't have to drink Sterno...

I really enjoyed your version of "Canned Heat"...I had that song on my "to learn" list but I forgot about it until now... your recording has inspired me to pick up my guitar and start practicing again !!

Thanks Mardelle, you're too kind. I put it together based on versions of the song shown to me by Paul Rishell (in class at Port Townsend) and by Michael Jerome Browne.

This is a great version - I see it's been up for some months, and don't know how I missed it....Anyway, great playing and great singing too, with excellent recording quality!

I see it's been up for some months, and don't know how I missed it....

There's a few older contributions that newer members might have missed - one tune from Slack - "Rising River Blues", a bunch of stuff from Reso1, banjochris and Montgomery, first efforts from a2tom, a tune from markm and thumbstyle...? Norfolk Slim, ragtime_uk, katie... probably more that I'm forgetting.

It's usually worth the effort to investigate further than the first page of topics - weenie's always got something interesting to check out!

Very fine, UB!  That's some driving, convincing, rhythmic right hand.  Vocals great too.

Thanks for letting us all in on one of Uncle's greatest hits.

Thanks Bob and Scratchy for the kind comments. It's a little mindboggling to me to see 80 people have downloaded this, given I can barely work up the nerve to play in front of my dog.

I'm also a fan of Paul Rishell ! I have two of his CD's "Moving to the Country" and "I Want You to Know" ..
I've been working on Rory Blocks version of "Canned Heat"..I have her "Classics of Country Blues Guitar" instructional cassettes...she's a great teacher..some of the other songs covered are Big Road Blues,Walkin Blues/Crossroad Blues,M&O Blues,Future Blues,That's No Way to Get Along & Police Dog Blues.?

Hey sounds great!

I can't even imagine drinking canned heat.

I guess they really were desperate during prohibition.

(But Tommy lived to an old age considering he drank that stuff!  ;) )

One of the benefits of the young 'uns going back over old posts is it bubbles stuff like this up to the top.  That's a right sprightly version, uncle bud.  I enjoyed it immensely.

Very nice version Bud
Reminds me of the stuff on my old "Legacy of Tommy Johnson" lp.   David Evans recorded family and friends of TJ and they all played pieces he once performed.  Your version would fit nicely on that album.
Cheers,
Carl

Thanks fellas. Once again, I'll say you're being too kind.

Daddy Stovepipe, if anything I did were to appear on an album of family and friends of Tommy Johnson, I believe I could die a satisfied man.

This version of Canned Heat is essentially an amalgam of versions I learned from Paul Rishell and Michael Browne.

I'll repeat Frankie's comment from way back in this thread: it's worth checking out older Back Porch posts. There are lots of gems in there from numerous folks...

Hey Andrew, just heard your Canned Heat Blues and liked it very much. Its very committed sounding and moves right along. Good job. :)

tried to find out what exactly is on the Evans 'Legacy of Tommy Johnson' LP and this is what I found out searching here and there on the net (since I do not own that LP):

V. A.: The Legacy Of Tommy Johnson

Anyone can complete / correct the track list ?
I'll scan labels and rear sleeve track list on Sunday. With that information you should be able to get the session details from the Fancourt-McGrath book.

Thanks J. The recording was made so long ago, I'm not sure what the guitar was. It may have been a Larrivee D-03R I used to have.

Nice take, Unc. Just be careful... if you do drink the canned heat don't get it on your strings... burn right off the gee-tar.

What Frankie said. I love your heavy,  thumping time which reminds  me somewhat of Jim jackson. You have a very full sound and in some parts it even sounds like there are two guitars. The vocals remind me of nohone but you and it sounds great!
