sorry for dragging up an oldie, but I just picked up this 3CD compilation and I am loving each tune...

Most were recorded in Paris in either September 1951 or Feb/Mar 1952.. So you get a chance to hear Big Bill do a lot of the earlier tunes in a different style...

All of the tracks reportedly were copied direct from the Vogue masters..

CD3 contains a number of "alternate takes, which are interesting.

It's a Great Set !!!

could i also recommend, big bills. 2 cd set, amsterdam unissued live concerts 1953. recorded by , louis van gasteren. it comes in "long box form" and within is a glossy 48 page insert, chock full of photographs. some of big bill pushing a pram. with his dutch son michael. who he had to, his dutch lover pim. and going back to the music the sound is absolutely superb. if you are a fan of big bill and you dont own this one,you really are missing out.

BIG BILL BROONZY - The Complete Vogue Recordings
Vogue 664351-2

This compilation has to racnk right up there with the Folkways, Trouble in Mind..

The compilation is 80% Big Bill solo..... so it really does give you an opportunity to compare his earlier solo versions to these.

This has been in constant play mode in my car and MP3 player for 2 weeks now....

I don't know if I missed something, but there is no mention of the JSP box sets, I have the first 2 volumes and I love them, any thoughts about these??

My personal preference is for the JSP re-issues over the Document sets..

At least to my ears, the JSP issues sound clearer with less noise....

But then again, can Big Bill Broonzy ever sound bad?

Yes! I have a bunch of cheap exploitation label BBB CDs that have very few redeeming moments sound-wise, and the playing is often way below Bill's high standard. However I can generally find something interesting in there.

Here is some "insider" information from Guido van Rijn reported in December last year:

For the past three years I have been working on a Big Bill Broonzy project.
Work has now been completed and the results will be published on 1 February
2006.
It is a DVD size box containing two CDs and a 48-page booklet in DVD box
size. The CDs contain two unissued concerts Big Bill Broonzy gave in
Amsterdam on 26 and 28 February 1953. They were recorded by Louis van
Gasteren and are in superior sound quality.

The booklet contains three essays and 38 unique photographs, many of them
published for the first time. They show Big Bill and his relatives in
Arkansas, Big Bill and his Amsterdam girlfriend, Big Bill and his Amsterdam
son Michael, Big Bill at Dutch concerts and radio shows, Big Bill's coffin
carried to its grave, Big Bill lying in state with Brother John Sellers
officiating, etc. I traced many of the Dutch jazz friends that Bill
presented with photographs. The most spectecular of these photos is a
hitherto unknown one of Bill leaning on his 1939 Chevrolet in Chicago in
1941. Next to him is Tommy McClennan playing his guitar!

...was this ever released?
