Been listening to the George Mitchell Collection over the last couple days and keep coming back to John Lee Ziegler's "If I Lose, Let Me Lose" – a truly beautiful performance.
I thought I'd have a stab at the lyrics, and there are a couple of places I'd appreciate some help; his diction is a bit unusual. I've indicated the places I'm having the most issue with with brackets. The first word of the piece should be "Ducks" but he comes in a little late, so I didn't include that.
... in the millpond, birds flying over,
Tell them [fool] gals, I'm comin' over,
Step back black gal, you can't shout,
I've got a yellow gal, to [beat your time],
Oh lose my money, let me lose,
If I lose my money, let me lose.
Lose my money, let me lose,
Lose my money, let me lose,
Lose my money, let me lose, let me lose,
If I lose my money, oh lose.
Up to the courthouse, back to the jail,
Look mighty cloudy but it ain't gonna hail,
If I lose my money, let me lose,
If I lose my money, let me lose.
Lose your money, don't you lose your mind,
Lose your woman, don't you mess with mine,
If I lose my money, let me lose,
If I lose my money, let me lose.
[Old] Dirty Red said, before he died,
One more road, I just got to ride
If I lose my money, let me lose,
If I lose my money, let me lose.
Ducks in the millpond, and geese is flyin' over,
Sally in the bed, and she couldn't turn over,
If I lose ... money, let me lose,
If I lose my money, let me lose.
Goin' up Cripple Creek, coming down Main,
Look mighty cloudy but it ain't gonna rain,
If I lose my money, let me lose,
If I lose my money, let me lose.
