Folk styles tend to be conservative and one doesn't have to move the earth in order to express oneself within a tradition. A little personal innovation goes a long way in this music and one needn't go overboard in the direction of technical virtuosity, self-consciously weird harmonic effects, or jazz-inspired no-holds-barred improvisations on the theme... - Art Rosenbaum, Old-Time Mountain Banjo

Well, I have recordings of Miles and Bob Pratcher, though I haven't listened to them for a while.  That was a special timbre, that comb with Fred's singing and the slide!  Who'd have thought it!  You don't hear that that much any more.  Thanks, David and Frank, for setting me straight!
All best,
Johnm

My loathings are simple: stupidity, oppression, crime, cruelty, soft music.

Hi all,
Here are a couple of more versions.  First Robert Petway's, which he called "Ride 'Em On Down".  He played it out of D position in standard tuning, as did Tommy McClennan, who certainly provided the model for Petway's version.  Here is "Ride 'Em On Down":

INTRO

Look, sweet mama, don't you see?  Shakin' that thing, mama, sure is 'bout to get the best of poor me, and I says,
REFRAIN:  Ah, done stop holl'in', well, must I ride 'em on down?
I done stopped holl'in', mama, now, I believe I ride 'em on down

Told me baby, she, week 'fore last, "Look now, baby, gettin' just a little too fast.", I says,
REFRAIN:  Ah, done stop holl'in', well, must I ride 'em on down?
I done stopped holl'in', mama, how must I ride 'em on down?

See, mama woman, what you done done, got me, sweet mama, now and your plumb good, man done come, I says,
REFRAIN:  Ah, done stopped holl'in', well, must I ride 'em on down? (Spoken: Ride 'em on down, man, we don't care.)
I done stopped holl'in', mama, well, must I ride 'em on down?

SOLO (Spoken, leading into solo:  Play it, man, play it a long time!)

Babe up the stairs, mama, can't come down, look now, man, she done lose her legs in old mornin' gown, I says,
REFRAIN:  Ah, done stopped holl'in', mama, well, must I ride 'em on down? (Spoken:  Yeah!)
I done stopped holl'in', mama, now, well must I ride 'em on down?

Two little boys, I say now, layin' in the bed, one of 'em jumped up now, done told the last one, sure fell dead, I says
REFRAIN:  Ah, done stop holl'in now, mama, must I ride 'em on down? (Spoken:  Yeah!
I done stopped holl'in', mama, well, must I ride 'em on down?

Here is a version from Johnny Shines.  I apologize if this is not viewable by non-U.S. residents.

All best,
Johnm
