Lee Morse - short film from 1930
« on: October 17, 2017, 08:40:04 AM »
Hi all,
In my porings over recordings of the '20s and '30s I've occasionally found some singers and musicians outside of the country blues and old time genres that I really enjoy. One of those is Lee Morse, who performed a variety of styles but was best known as a blues and jazz vocalist. She also played guitar and piano and did some countryesque material that involved a pretty unique yodel. I have a very beat up 78 of hers that I love that focuses more on this latter style, but the only LP collection I could find is mostly from her jazz period.

Anyhow, today while searching for one thing I found another, this 10 minute short where Lee performs various songs in various settings in the imagined scenario that every time someone plays her record she is right there with them. The whole thing is pretty great, but my favorite performance is around the 3:46 mark.

And here's more info on Lee:

And thanks to the wonder of the Internet Archive, you can grab many of her recordings here:

Ooh! I like Lee Morse. To really hear her best stuff, this is the reissue to get. Lovingly compiled by her number one fan/researcher Ian House this double CD contains 50 recordings from 1924-1930 and can't be beat! https://www.amazon.com/Songbird-50-Recordings-ORIGINAL-RECORDINGS-REMASTERED/dp/B000B6TRIE
