Hurt would introduce 'Coffee Blues' by declaring that his favorite coffee was Maxwell House because it was 'good till the last drop.' This is the kind of song that comes with a wink and a nudge. At the Gaslight, the mug Hurt would bring to the stage was not filled with coffee, but with a spot of whiskey. - John Milward, notes from Mississippi John Hurt, The Complete Studio Recordings

The audio cd for this volume I think may be my fave of all time. The quality is unbelievable. Cleaner copy of blind Joe Reynolds outside woman! Jed Davenport kills! The Memphis Minnie also a fave, and wring my hands... by Gussie, the only track where he sings in the same key he plays in is great.  I also can't believe I've never heard Leroy Garnett Nesbitt as well, I'm absolutely blown away by his piano. Cheers! Buy it, it seems like they might be going out business.

Un-re-issued Broonzy I think.

Mine is on the way with the man in the sleigh.

John writes that the customer base is "stagnant," his point being that sales are falling below the threshold necessary to make producing calendars and the accompanying CDs a viable enterprise. He suggests that buying them as gifts would be a way to increase sales.

Obviously he's preaching to the faithful, but at the same time he's probably just being up front with the realities of serving a niche market. So do what you can to keep the calendar and CD side of his business a worthwhile venture.
