Interesting paper about "Hellhound"

I've often thought of Robert Johnson's "Cross Roads Blues" as about fear of being attacked or arrested while traveling alone at night. The author of this paper doesn't mention that song. But his argument about "Hellhound" sounds plausible, and if we consider the two songs together, even more plausible.

Not convinced.
RJ was a big fan of Peetie Wheatstraw - plenty of devil and the like references there.

"The most popular interpretation is that the song evokes Johnson's fabled deal with the devil"

As interesting as the paper is, I believe there is a reason that this is the most popular interpretation.
Confident that I'm probably almost definitely the youngest record label owner in my street
