Miller-Tacke L-00
« on: January 21, 2015, 01:57:39 PM »
Hello Folks,

Well, I had a great weekend in Portland at the 16th annual Old Time Music Gathering.  Lots of fun music and reconnecting with friends.  Among my personal highlights were playing in an elevator jam with Mike Brosnan, hearing Rich Hartness perform, eating waffles at 3 am, and checking out my friend Chris Miller's new guitar.  Chris is fairly new to the luthierie game, but I've been impressed with his work I've seen so far and wanted to share a bit about it here.  The guitar is based on a 1937 14 fret X braced L-00, and was built in 10 days (!) by Chris and his friend Aaron Tacke.  It has a nice crisp punchiness to the sound, and having recently played on a few L-00's of the same era I'd say he got it very much in the same range.  The neck is a not-too-slender rounded V, and I found the bound fretboard very comfortable.  Here's a couple impromptu videos Chris took of me trying it out with fingerpicks and a flatpick respectively..

Sounds good.

Careful Devin, you'll be losing business!

Great pickin' as always, Devin! It was great seein' ya an' pickin' a few tunes. Hope we don't have to wait til the next OT Gathering to do it again. :) The elevator jam was certainly the highlight for me!
As for that purty guitar... I didn't get a chance to play it, but I can definitely say that it sounds even better on stage!

It was great to see you too Mike.  Considering we only live about three hours apart, it'd be nice to get together more than once a year!

Careful Devin, you'll be losing business!

Heh.  Nothing wrong with some healthy competition...   I hope.  ;)    I suppose I'd rather see more quality luthier made old style guitars on the market, than a lot of the factory stuff that looks vaguely cool but with the playability and sound of burnt toast.
