I made a CD- 'Moonshine'
« on: April 07, 2014, 09:52:01 AM »
Title says it all really.

Over the course of the past 2 or 3 years, I've been having fun with home recording and built up a batch of recordings until the point where I realised that if i did a few more and polished them up, I had an album's worth.

Partly prompted by encouragement at a few local events I've played at, and a forthcoming gig, I've now got round to pulling it all together, doing a moderately cliched photoshoot with my 6 year old son behind the lens, writing some liner notes- and getting the whole thing produced.  So here it is in all its imperfect glory.  Played, sung, recorded, mixed and mastered by me.  I play mainly acoustic guitar, but the album also features 12 string, resonator, ukulele and six string banjo.  Also, double bass from the wife on one track and some fantastic harp from fellow Weenie Blueingreen on a couple of tracks too.  Full free preview available at Bandcamp (along with download) so please feel free to go and have a listen.

Congratulations Simon! Sounding very good!

I liked your playing and singing a lot. Some beautiful harmonies there too. I liked especially "How Small We Are", is that your own composition?

Cheers

Thanks folks.

Cheapfeet- I have two Audio Technica large condenser mics, a Lexicon "Digitial Audio Workstation" which connects the mics to the pc with phantom power etc, and a copy of Cubase Le4 to mix and adjust everything in.  Thats about it.  In a smallish attic room, facing the wall (somehow the sound is completely flat and lifeless if I record facing out into the room).

Pan- Yes- that one's mine.  One of a couple of self indulgent forays into singer-songwriter territory!

Blueingreen- Thanks for the great harp parts!

Hi, Simon.  Congrats on your CD!  I had a listen this afternoon - it's really nice.  As Prof Scratchy said a good choice of material for you.  I can't believe you get such a good sound from your attic room and all that technology seems a bit intimidating but definitely worth it :D
Your son takes a good photo for a 6-year-old, too!

The CD really sounds good, Simon.  I think my particular favorites are "Up the Way Bound", which is just ripping, and the two from pianists, "Don't Give My Lard Away" and "Whiskey Drinkin' Woman".  Well done, and congratulations!
All best,
Johnm

Thanks Laura, jrn, rob and John.

John,  the two pianist's tracks are ones I would never have known about but for your lyrics threads on them a while back!

Nice one Simon and remarkably good sound quality. I especially like the Julius Daniels piece.
