Hi Paul,

Yep, the Juke has been losing the 24K stream lately (a few times).  See my post to JohnC about the Juke machine feeling the strain.  Will add some more memory to the machine this weekend (you are fore warned! ;) ) to see if that will help.

24K is back (you are lucky I stopped back in after happy hour ;) )

Cheers,

Thanks, Slack.

Yes, I am lucky you stopped in after happy hour.  But then I'm even luckier I found WC in the first place.

Of course the whole problem is that The Blues is like a drug to the soul -- we get hooked on it and if we're forced to go without for a while, we go into withdrawal.  (Fortunately, I could listen to my new 4CD Lonnie Johnson box set from Proper Records, "The Original Guitar Wizard".  Despite the fact is has a few tracks where is plays behind Jazz groups, and all but 5 tracks on the fourth CD are from post war sessions (1944 thru 1952), I'd still highly recommend it for the juke.  (And I've seen it on E-bay for $13 and change -- a great price.)

Anyway, thanks for restoring the 24k stream -- hopefully the added menory will help.  Probably my real answer is to find some way to afford an upgrade to a high-speed connection.

Just stay where you are Paul and the price will come down to you.  :D Over here in the UK it is to get broadband for less than quite a few of the dial-up offers.

Hi Paul,

Yes, the Lonnie Johnson Box set would make a fine addition to the Juke - we'll see what we can do.

Added more memory yesterday - so hopefully that will cure the 24K feed from dropping out (really weird, the Shoutcast server program just disappears) - so far so good.

My theory is that we've all got a ton of CD's to listen to - but the Juke has certain appeal, because the Auto DJ does an outstanding job most of the time picking the tunes AND it is a revolt against years of enduring really crappy radio.  ;D

... it is a revolt against years of enduring really crappy radio.

I'll second that!!!

With the exception of Blues Before Sunrise, which I usually can't force myself to stay up all Saturday Night to listen to, the last radio I actually enjoyed was probably when I was probably during the late 50s-early 60s during the doo-wop days.  Before that, as a kid in LA listening to a little crystal radio my dad built for me.  Zane Grey Theater, Orsen Wells, the Green Hornet, that kind of stuff.

Well, the next time you're in Poughkeepsie NY, tune your radio to WHVW, 950 AM.  It 's one of the last independent radio stations around here.  Mornings from 6 to noon are given to stuff from the 50s and 60s, and there are a few hours of classical in the evenings.  A few specialty shows on the weekends: a German show, and Irish show, a great gospel show on Sunday mornings.  But the rest of the time is "music that originally appeared on 78s".  It's a great mix of country, blues, jazz, and some pop (with the occasional early 60s folk song that I swear was never issued on 78).  It's not unusual to hear Uncle Dave Macon, the Mississippi Shieks, Count Basie, Bob Wills, Bing Crosby, and Lonnie Johnson in one set.  And don't get the idea from the preceeding list that they only play famous artists.  There are lots of oddities and obscurities in the mix.  Pirate Joe, the afternoon DJ, will always anounce the label and record number, and the composer and personnel whenever possible.  The station is a joy and a treasure, and makes up for the fact that I can't listen to Weenie Campbell in my car.

I've been really happy with the way the juke has been running lately...I've had no trouble getting on until today, which prompted me to take a look at the Juke Status page. I noticed that one IP address was taking up six slots. Is there a legitimate reason for that to happen?

Hi Oz,

There could be several users behind a shared IP listening to the juke - say in an office setting.  However, the above scenario is 2 or 3 folks ripping the stream - when you get the same IPs a few seconds apart - they are ripping the stream.... whcih is a constant battle.   I've got an automatic monitoring program that helps - but nothing is perfect or will keep the determined to rip, out.

Thanks for the heads up -- I've freed up some 48K slots for you - better go grab one quick. ;)

cheers,

I hate to sound like a net cop, but if the juke server is privy to membership status, would it be worth while to limit the number of 48k slots available to guests (maybe 11 for members and 4 for guests)?   (I'm assuming that if a member were the "ripper" you could identify them by IP address and put an end to that.)

At least that way, there would be fewer slots for guest "rippers" (who I suspect are the primary culprits) to hog, and more slots available for members (this might also encourage folks to join).   I suspect the vast majority of "rippers" are using 48k slots, not 24k slots, so you could probably keep the 24k slots available to all.)

Hi Paul,

Yes, I think you are correct in that it is primarily guest rippers and most of them seem to be from Germany!  ...for some reason

And yes, the Juke could be programmed to only allow registered accounts onto the 48K stream - at least I know that others have down this for other forum software (not SMF to my knowledge).  But I'm reluctant to do this - mainly because it is not a very big problem yet.  I don't think we've ever filled All 25 slots (I thinks 23 is the highest) - and I'd have to look at a report but I think we averaged 9 or 10 listeners in March - that's 24/7.  I also hate to do it becasue it will prevent legitimate listeners from tuning in too.... a hassle to log in in ordr to listen.  We'll see how it goes - the automatic monitoring does a pretty good job -- and for the times it gets fooled - I can go in a manually ban the rippers.

Cheers,
slack

Hi folks,

Looks like the Juke has crashed.  It will not come up via remote access -- so it will have to wait, about an hour, before I can get to it.

Sorry for the pause in programming. :)

Many apologies for a crashed Juke this morning - a configuration error in the "Album Concert" show (my fault) crashed the Juke.

I'll keepo a closer eye on the 4pm run of the same event.  :D

Thanks,
slack

Richard's show before that, although I think you've cracked that one.

By-the-by my password is still screwed on the Test Bed; so don't know if there has been any moves there lately.
