Title: Fretboard Journal
Post by: thumbstyle on December 29, 2005, 02:04:51 PM
Howdy Weenies,

Happy Christmaka to all of you out there! I'm wishing you all a happy and peaceful 2006.

Has anyone else seen the new magazine Fretboard Journal? The first issue is just out now. It's a beautifully produced quarterly on fretted instuments, with a focus on storytelling rather than gear reviews. They're making an obvious effort to go in a different direction from other publications. The editor is Michael Simmons, who used to work at Gryphon Stringed Instruments in Palo Alto, and who has written for Acoustic Guitar.

The first issue has articles on David Grisman and his Tone Poets CD, guitar lessons with Reverend Gary Davis, the Santa Cruz Guitar Company, and John Tefteller, among others.

As an aside, I'm wondering if some of the articles posted on the Weenie site might be candidates for publication in this new magazine? Just a thought.

All best,
Dave

...visited the link, looks very very nice, and very tempting :P ... over the past thirty years or so I've subscribed to various and sundry pubs devoted to guitar/blues and now have a basement full of old magazines  :o  ..the National Geographics of future garage sales?

The latest issue of The Fretboard Journal just showed up in my mailbox. It's the usual treasure trove. It's all interesting as usual, but there are reviews of Linthead Stomp and Gastonia Gallop as well as a short piece on Retrofret, which have been topics of discussion here.

P.S. It looks like Retrofret is relatively close to the Jalopy Theatre.

My wife got me a subscription to the Fretboard Journal for Christmas last year.  I hope Santa's stocking includes a renewal this year...
