Title: Unissued Field Recordings from Axel Kustner
Post by: jharris on August 31, 2018, 07:10:40 AM
Sorry I'm posting this late - I really need to work on my marketing skills. Anyway, I thought some on this forum would find this interesting.

Last week kicked off the first of a three-part feature on my program  Big Road Blues  (https://sundayblues.org/) spotlighting previously unreleased blues recordings captured by Axel K?stner of Germany between 1972-1978, the bulk from 1978 when he spent six months hanging out, recording and photographing blues musicians across the United States. K?stner is best known for his 1980 trip to the States, recordings which were issued on Living Country Blues USA. This  trip, while not the intention at the time, laid the groundwork for his 1980 trip, recording many of the artists he met on that earlier visit. Most of the artists were recorded informally at their homes and include well known figures such as Big Joe Williams, Honeyboy Edwards, Little Freddie King, Louisiana Red, Juke Boy Bonner, K.C. Douglas, R. L. Burnside as well as a slew of fine, little remembered blues musicians such as Arzo Youngblood, Boogie Bill Webb, Lattie "The Wolf" Murrell, Joe Carter, Flora Molton, Archie Edwards and many others. The first show is already up with the others airing Sept.16 and Sept. 23. Check out the website for some wonderful photos by Axel and the first part of an essay that Axel and I worked on together.

The photos are brilliant, and the first show was a great listen. Thanks for your shows which I regularly listen to on Mixcloud.

"Just recently researcher T. DeWayne Moore of Oxford, Ms., sent me some newspaper articles from Greenville from the late 1940s up to the mid-1960s that reported on Mr. Savage?s brushes with the law. Obviously, he was a really wild character and some of the stuff sounds almost straight out of a Hollywood movie!"

Axel really writes a good narrative on the page as well.....

Just a head's up that part 2 will be airing 9/16 and available online 8:00 PM (EST) that night. Axel and I will be spinning unissued sides by Little Freddie King, Arzo Youngblood, Roosevelt Holts, Boogie Bill Webb, Honeyboy Edwards and others. We've got tremendous response for the first installment so thanks for everyone who listened.
