The song "I Ain't Gonna Marry" which Maria Muldaur has been singing for at least 50 years -- what is the source for that tune? Maria and Jim Kweskin say it was learned from a 78 of a female singer. So, not the Alabama Sheiks, and not Brantley & Williams' "Cat's Got the Measles, Dog's Got the Whooping Cough" (their version is killer!!). It's not Ida Cox's Lawdy Blues. Anyone know??

And, NOT the Viola mcCoy recording.

... me I would have thought the Viola McCoy version (Brunswick 2591-A) to have been the first

It might be the first, but the similarity to the song that Maria Muldaur sings is in the title only:

here's Muldaur's:

which is melodically much closer the the Alabama Sheiks Lawdy Lawdy Blues:

It's definitely not the Viola McCoy. I thought Alabama Sheiks, but Jim Kweskin insists that he heard (this would be about 50 years ago or more) a recording of a female classic blues singer doing the song.

An definitely not the Ida Cox song, either, as you pointed out:

Maybe that melody was sung with a different set of lyrics under a totally unrelated title.

Hmmm.... a total longshot:

I found it. Blind Man Blues by Sara Martin. Title must be a complete mistake as there's nothing at all about Blind Men in the song. Sidney Bechet!!
