Hello All,
One of the great things about Country Blues is its universal appeal. It has been fun to watch the Juke's Server Status screen and amazing to see the many different countries that listen to Weenie Juke Radio. Forum participants come from an equally broad number of countries from around the world. Even though the forum and the music is in English - Weenie Campbell and Country Blues are truly international.
Various members have expressed a desire for other members to make known their City and Country of origin. See this thread:
http://weeniecampbell.com/yabbse/index.php?Itemid=47&?topic=845.0
To encourage this, I thought it would be fun to install a forum modification, similar to the listing on Weenie Juke Radio, called "Member Map'. This allows a member to place a pin on a World Map of their location. A City name can optionally be filled in also. Once the pin is placed, a small country of origin flag will show below their member name in posts. The flag will also show next to a member name (or guest) in the Who's Online listing (if you do not like the flag, you can always hide your online status). The map can get a little confusing, so here are some tips:
Click the "Map" button on the Forum's main menu.
Click the 'Place you pin' link
Select the Map from the drop down lisitng
Place the cross-hatch on your location and click to place your pin
(optionally fill in City and Country)
Click the 'Save Pin' link
Now view the 'World' or other countries and if you click on the member name - their Pin will blink. 8)
Cheers,
Slack

Possible problem with Safari. When I try to position my pin on SF I get an Illegal Coordinates message (must be a Republican program). Anyway, after experimenting I found out that the pin apears about 1000 miles south and a little east of where I place the cross hairs. And to attemp to hit SF on the penninsula I'd have to position the crosshairs off the map, which it won't let me do. So it can tell when I'm just off the map, even tho' it thinks I'm way down and over from there if I move just onto the map. Weird. Oh well. I'll try it on a Mac with IE later today.
All for now.

Hi! Waxy,
Have you tried the otherside of the map? It may possibly wrap right round. As some people think it really does.
Boots

Hey guys looks like I is da only one in Aussieland.

Hhh.

Slack has made amends with a new map. North West Europe - it joins you up with us mainlanders. 8)

really nice feature - 2 things I've noticed. First, I appear to alphabetize to the front of the USA list - a quirk I am not used to since my name has always put me at the end of the line in school, etc - a perk of being a2tom?
Second, there seems to be a developing pattern that no one is from the birthplaces of the blues - the USA map is sort of comical in that regard (at this moment). Strong developing clusters in the north, midwest and west, with this void over southern places like Mississippi. There is one El Paso Texan...

Richard, at least the gun was not aimed at me. And go ahead and draw the Channel Islands in -- either a marker on your monitor -- or if you wanna get fancy, you could do a tranparent overlay. O0
There is one El Paso Texan...
A mere 600 miles away from Blind Lemon Jefferson's hometown. ;)

I am having trouble too placing my pin in the appropriate place. I also use Safari, and am finding that, like John, the dot appears somewhere in the south Pacific when I try to place it in southern CA. Any suggestions?
Bg
-
And I am having essentially the same problem using my friends old Mac with IE running in OS9. When I view the world map, everybodies pins are somewhere above the user listings! Except Mr blind rat, who appears to be just north of Korea. When I try to place a pin on SF it appears off the Baja Penninsula. Was this map program created by Bill Gates by any chance?
All for now.
John C.
-
Nope, created by an amatuer programmer - so you may not be any better off. ;)
I'll ask on the support board and see if Macs and the Safari browser are a problem.
Thanks,
slack
-
I think the map is really great :)
Looks as though there are nearly enough Weenies in Seattle to have a chapter, coven, convent, congress or whatever a conflagation of Weenies is ;D
Visually it makes up for the intermittent juke reception from totally my useless DSL comnection since I can now look at the map and imagine the music wafting forth.. ::).
-
Richard,
How about a "Whoop" of Weenies. :)
Boots
-
Wow... There's another country blues fan within 12 miles or so of me! What a wonderful discovery. :)
-
There you go - that alone was worth installing the Member Map... cool! 8)
-
Note to American Weenies:
I see that aside from a N. Carolinian, a Missourian and a couple of Texans all the map posts are from Democratic states.
Don't Republicans get the blues?
Alex
-
Now Alex, are you trying to bait us Americans... hmm?
If we keep the politics to the 1920's and 1930's -- it won't matter what colored state... and as a bonus, we'll be more in line with the purpose of the forum! ;)
Cheers and thanks,

So, back home on my Cube with Safari. No problem viewing, everyone seems to be where they should be. I placed my pin using the World map and left it where it appeared, about 2-3000 miles due west of Tierra del Fuego. At least it's the nice time of the year down here.
All for now.
John C.
Edit- Actually, Shelley seems to have moved Vancouver up to the arctic circle. BRRRR! Wrong time of year for that Shelley.
-
JohnC, I posted a query in the Member Map topic about Macs and the Safari browser - but no one has replied and I see no other reference to Macs or Safari - so it is indeed weird.. I'll keep checking - but I'm glad at least you've become an earthling.
cheers,
slack
edit: Shelley has had too many Corona's. :P
-
I notice Uncle Bud, known Safari user, is also lost in space, Perhaps he keeps landing in Argentina?
All for now.
John C.

Waxy, why not try sticking it somewhere (nice) at random. It could well end up nearer SF.
Boots
-
I notice Uncle Bud, known Safari user, is also lost in space, Perhaps he keeps landing in Argentina?
Something to try John.... and I quote:
"You may have to refresh the javascript file in your cache. It is updated by the mod and most browsers won't notice the new functions until you do."
Try emptying the cache in your browser.
cheers,

John C.
I have been lost in space for far longer than the Member Map has been in place.
-
I tried emptying the cache in Safari and I still end up off the map. Doesn't work in Explorer either. :-\
-
Bummer!
The Mac browser is having problems with the Member Map Javascript. The only other thing I can think to try right now is to try the 'Netscape for Mac' browser. :(
-
Sorry I don't have Netscape.? ::) It's worse on Internet Explorer than on Safari. When I go to the map page on IE, everyone's dots are in the Antartic Ocean. :o
-
HI all:
About every third time I view the map the dots are in weird positions. However, if I click on each member's name in the list above the map one-by-one they return to their right place and stay there.
Alex
-
Hey! Alex,
You make the earth move. ;)
Very interesting.
Boots

BG, well the only other thig I can think of is to borrow a friends Windows PC for 3 minutes (I know this is sacreligious) and place your pin. :)

Good idea Slack. This could be a new sport for Mac owners. Dare to be different. ;)

I'm running a Mac and a PC.....and believe it or not they sit right next to each other on the desk (they even play well together). I've had no problems viewing the map on Safari. I have experienced the vanishing dot phenomenon though. It's fixed by clicking on the member names as described above.
Why do I have both? Because I use whatever tool works best for the job I'm doing. Creative stuff: Mac. Academic stuff: PC.
-
Were you able to "Place Your Pin" in Safari, or did you do that on the PC? That's the only thing I can't really do. Any Mac users able to "Place Your Pin"? Perhaps the Map is more of an academic pursuit?<G>
All for now.
John C.
-
I see the map and everyone's dots fine on the Mac in Safari. The problem comes when I try to place my pin somewhere. When I put the crosshairs on Los Angeles, the pin ends up in the Antartic. When I open the map while in Explorer, EVERYONE'S pins seem to be in the ocean! Bg
-
Honestly, I couldn't remember whether I placed my pin on the pc or the mac, so I went back and deleted my pin so that I could give it a try with the mac......and lo and behold, when I place the cursor over southern Missouri and click, my dot ends up at the bottom of the map. Using Internet Explorer (rather than Safari) the dot ends up over on the right side of the map. So obviously I used the pc to put the pin there in the first place. As Bluesygirl says, everyone else's dot looks fine.
Unfortunately, I'm not much help as to what could be causing this.
-
Well I am sad (still!) that neither of my browsers allow me to represent myself here in So Cal. I don't have access to a PC really so if anyone figures out how to get me out of the Arctic Ocean, let me know! ^-^
-
What about telling me where you want your pin and I'll try and stick it in for you :o
Now, no naughty suggestions, please ;)
-

Thanks anyway Richard. If I had my choice, I'd rather do it myself. ;) Otherwise, there's no link to my name/location. Bg

Slack,
Themap does not seem to be working this evening. Or is it just my machine,

Looks like it is broken - thanks for heads up - I'll look into it.

Slack,
Themap does not seem to be working this evening. Or is it just my machine,
Boots I upgraded some of our software last night - including re-installing the Member Map - but still no go - so dunno what the problem could be. I wonder if we broke it when we made the move to the new host? In any case, it may be out of commission ofr awhile.
Thanks,
slack

OK. I'll keep watching, :)

I have searched, but have not been able to locate the map. Can someone give me some direction?
I was wanting to add a pin from far western Kentucky.

Hi! David,
Slack took the Member map down as it was troublesome. We're waiting to see if the programmers are going to do an update.

I got all excited. I was hoping the map with my pin in it would be like a blues S.O.S. and some other blues fan might find me stranded out here in the pop country ocean.
I keep the flares dry and keep looking for signs of repair.
-
well where does your pin go David?
-
well where does your pin go David?
In the nicest possible way. :P

Between Smithland and Ledbetter, just a across the river from Possum Trot.
I'm eight miles east of Paducah, Kentucky, which is the only town in this far western end you may have heard of. Smithland does show up on most maps since its a county seat, but with a population of less than 500 it doesn't show up very well.
For the most part I really like living in a place no one ever heard of; but its a real bummer trying to find anyone interested in playing blues around here.
-
Wow! Is that quiet. I reckon I can probably see 500 people from my window in Hackney, East London.
Boots
-
I guess quiet is relative. The road in front of my farm runs between Smithland and Paducah and I can hear traffic from it all the way to the back of the farm.
This morning (Sunday) I tried to get a recording of the dry flies (Cicadas) and the birds. I was wanting about four to five minutes of clean tape for a project I have in the works. My rather primitive recording equipment is in a home-made cabinent out at the shop. I just sat the mic on the window sill and pushed "record."
Seemed like two or three cars would pass by every time I'd get close to having what I wanted. Too much noise for my taste!
-
Well I'm in the wrong area, but similar size area. My nearest town is Bell, FL. and it's 300 or so people and I'm 4 miles out of town.
-
it's 300 or so people and I'm 4 miles out of town.
That's about the right combination. Towns are great places to visit, but not too often.
-
OK Folks,
Here is an alternative to our old Member Map that I think is pretty cool (thanks Rivers for keeping the eagle eye out). My suggestion for filling in the name and picture fields is to use the same login name and Avatar that you use here. You can subscribe to "Frapper Maps" and get an email everytime someone posts a new pin. Give it a try:

Cheers,

I'm in but you might put a notice in the main for folks who don't read here.
-
Hi Doug, whuddaya mean they don;t read here?! :P
I added a front page graphic, left column, for the Member Map -- I think most folks will eventually come across it there.
Thanks,
slack
-
Either it won't take my add or about 20 of me are going to show up later!
-
Well, it is a Beta. ;)
Lemme giv it a try, what is your Zip code?
-
Thanks I got it. I figured out it doesn't recognize all zip codes so I tried until one worked.
-
Aargh! Slack could you please clean up the Port Townsend pin's web link for me, I messed it up.
-
The only option I have is "Remove" --- so I did --- and now you can try again. :D
-
gary
What's with the zip codes. I tried a few local zip codes, but nothing works. I guess gmap only has major cities in it's lookup table? I could enter a Seattle zip code - I only live 100 miles away. Charlie
-
Yeah, seems you can't edit, you can just add on. When I went to add on the pic from last night at PT I decided to edit my "Shoutout" message. Ended up with the first two lines from a blues so I had to think quick and add the last verse. 'Course now some wise-ass is gonna say I have to write the guitar part and a few more verses.-G-
So, can you save Port Towensend from being stuck with a broken link, Slack? How 'bout deleting a pin and doing over. Well, nice thought either way, Riv.
Whoop, I see you've already answered that, Slack.
That seems odd that it won't accept some zip codes. Man you can zoom in and read the street names. My pin only missed my house by about 10 blocks. Hey, I tried to enter a few times and then noticed the message that said I must enter a Shoutout message. Maybe thet's your problem?
All for now.

I don;t think it is GMap -- but the fellows that have programmed the app - "risingconcepts" - it is a Beta, so I'm sure they know they need to add all the zip codes annd it is a mystery why they have not (I think I'll shoot them an email) - as the tables are readily available! Unless they have to assocaite all Zip codes with Longitude and Latitude - then it is a chore and I understad. :)
Why not add yourself as Seattle and we can always refine later, when they get all Zip codes in?
Cheers,
-
Slack
I used a Seattle zip code - it works fine. I can zoom in and see my house, in particular using the TM satellite imagery, but no zip codes. Charlie
-
Got it. Don't zoom in too tight or you'll end up in Puget Sound (edit: no, it's moved inland). My pin ended up behind our local Radio Shack store.

Jeez Louise, what is that thing that Stuart uploaded?? Looks like a cross between a kiwi, an aardvark and a tasmanian devil. A kiwidevilvark?
-
I'm afraid to ask. :P Actually, it looks familiar but I dunno what it is called -- some kind of anteater? Stuart, what the heck is it!?
-
It's Almiqui. A native of Cuba, Almiqui was thought to be extinct until a live one was discovered a few years ago. Almiqui lives underground and seems to only come out at night. Almiqui is also on a Cuban coin and a stamp. Almiqui's rediscovery is the kind of thing that gives me hope.

Bloody thing, the Channel Islands do not exist :-\

Aw, but thou art wrong.
If you zoom in on the United Kingdom, Guernsey and the Baliwick of Jersey are indeed on the map (as well as Herm and Sark!).

I wonder when the "zip code" table will be finished. Rural zip codes in central Washington do not work - I have to enter a Seattle or near Seattle zip code. Even with this minor glitch, its great to see the weenie map. I might have missed it, but is there a link to the map on the home page or left navbar? Cheers, Charlie

Now there's a surprise Richard. >:D

I might have missed it, but is there a link to the map on the home page or left navbar?
Right below the calendar on the left column "Member Map" with a graphic below. Maybe I should add a link to the User Menu...???

Hey when I lived in Central WA we didn't want Seattle to know we were there. :)
-
Well I owe it an apology it does have Guernsey :o except that it is still wrong in that it's the Balliwick of Guernsey instead of the Balliwick of Jersey, but really who cares as it's a great improvement on the other map we had :)
So now, how do I delete my original entry, can't seem to do that!

I've got to do it --- and will do forthwith.

Bump
Post your pins folks if you are so inclined, only 40 so far.
Interesting to see we have a weenie in Tenerife in the Canary Islands!
My favorite auntie, who gave me first guitar, lives there.

GRRRRRRRRRR!! I've been trying to post my pin and all I get is "Invalid City - please try again". The concept of an invalid city rather appeals to me poetically, but how the **** do I get my pin and (very fetching) photo onto the map? I don't want have to go to City Hall and tell the Lord Mayor that actually this place does not exist; it was a city when NYC was a couple of shacks by the Hudson...
Helpppp!!

Can you delete feeble attempts for pin postings. Google has finally updated their zip code table. Please delete

I will repost a new pin with picture. I might win an award for the "clueless postings". I still have to look at the .php/htm code for the weenie clock. I am still swamped. Happy holidays! Cheers, Charlie

Gerry, yup -- it is a bit frustrating. I've still got my eye out for a better Map -- there is a fellow working on a similar google map, but integrted with the forum - whcih would give me better control (eg no ads).
OK Charlie - deleted them.

Ok Folks,
Here is another Member Map for you to try. This one is an early Beta and they plan on adding Avatars (pictures) at some point in time, plus other stuff. The advantages are: 1) it is an intergrated with our forum (like the old Member Map) as opposed to being an outside third party application like Frappr. 2) You place a pin by pointing and clicking (like the old map), so we would not have to wait for Frappr to update their city database 3) Does not include Frappr Ads (although Google may stick some ads in there at some point). Anyway, give it a try, see what you think, make a recommendation on what direction/which map you think we ought to use. (Some folks have already found it ;) )
To place your Pin: View/Edit Profile->Forum Profile Information and then scroll to the bottom of the page where you'll find the map.
To view the Map (I have not set up any Menu Links yet):
http://weeniecampbell.com/yabbse/index.php?amp;Itemid=74&action=membermap
Cheers,

Mr Dodson:
I tried all this. Though a blank space appears, no map comes up.
So far I like the Frapper one better.
Alex
-
Blank screen to place your Pin? or to view the Map? Browser?
In light of these developments -- I can understand your preference. :P
-
Both. A blank harvest gold square comes up (in both cases), but no map appears.
I'm using Internet Explorer.
Alex
-
What version of IE? Windows or Mac?
-
Windows.
My connection is a 56K dialup
Alex
-
My connection is a 56K dialup
Ah, maybe you have no patience. :D What version of IE? go To Help->About Internet Explorer
-
6.0
I waited 5 min.
-
Working fine for me Slack - IE Version 6.0.2800 using Win-XP SP1 on 1Mb broadband - map comes up almost instantly.
Only thing is that the selection map in the Forum Profile area will not let you zoom in as much as the main map so my marker appears a few streets over from where I actually live - but, still very impressive.
Happy New Year and a great 2006 to you and to ALL Weenies and CB enthusiasts (whether they play or not).
Cheers
Steve
-
Much more acurate. Am puzzled by Steve's comment! My pin has gone with 50m of true, could only have been closer if it had shown the blocks in outline.
-
Alex
The five minute wait must be a Canadian thing. Or Google is just busy over the holidays.
Happy New Year, Charlie
-
Bullseye for me. I no longer live in Radio Shack's loading bay. Usability enhancements will follow I'm sure but dialup connections will always suffer in a graphics-intensive app like this one unfortunately. Maybe they can get it running faster on the server side.
-
I tried all this. Though a blank space appears, no map comes up.
Alex, I see you got your pin place -- did you use someone else's computer?
-
Yes, the one at work.
Alex
-
Aaaah !! Thanks to Boots for making me look at this again.
When I couldn't get closer than a couple of streets away I was zooming in on the 'Hybrid' view in the Profile area. This only zoomed in so far and then said that it didn't have the data available to zoom any further. However, changing the view to 'Map' allowed me to zoom right in to street level and I could then delete my marker and re-set it at the exact place.
Excellent stuff.
Cheers, take care, and have agreat 2006.
Steve ;D
-
Hey! Slack what is happening with the Google member map? Has it been deemed not suitable. I notice that the link in your post now points to the Forum.
Boots
-
Waiting for them to upgrade it so it will work with the version of the forum software.... and hopefully add some features.
The database remains intact - so folks will not loose their pins if the mod gets updated and I am able to install again.

Cheers for that Slack. Hope it is not too long.

Okey Dokey the forum integrated Member Map is back.
You like this better than Frappr map I take it?
-
Also, I've updated the Member Map (http://weeniecampbell.com/yabbse/index.php?amp;Itemid=74&action=membermap) link under the User Menu to go to the Integrated MM.
-
Yes I like it better. Get a much more accurate pin position.
Boots

Great work Slack all is good. :P

Yes I like it better. Get a much more accurate pin position.
Yeah, I do too. I think I'll unpublish the Frappr map and move the Member Map link from the User Menu to the Main Menu. That way Guests can view the map, but you must be registered to place your pin.
Let's encourage folks to place their pins on the integrated map and see if we have any further problems --- I know Alex had problems with dial up and I don't think either map is compatible with Macs - but don't know that for sure.
Cheers,
slack
-
Yeah, I do too. I think I'll unpublish the Frappr map and move the Member Map link from the User Menu to the Main Menu.
Good idea. We got quite a few pins on the Frapper and I feel when Weenies see this one they'll be a stampede.
I remember Alex having problems getting his pin anywhere near it should be. Being on dial-up does make it a less enticing feature if you're waiting minutes for it to load.
I don't think either map is compatible with Macs
This is odd being that Macs are such a favourite with graphics people.
Edit: tag error.
Boots

just became aware and got my pin in. I think I got it pretty much in my driveway - amazing.
What's up with Indiana - is there a satellite blackout there?

No problem at all on Macs. Either Safari or Firefox. I got the pin right on my front deck.
BTW Slack, now that I'm back home using Fiefox on my desktop, those dropout issues seem to have gone away. Maybe the switch to Joomla did it. Left column centering issue (in Safari) gone too.
All for now.

Great John.
Well that is the way to go then --- maybe it was Frappr that was not ready for Macs.

Not sure this is directly related to this feature, but I got the attached error when modifying my profile. I thought that maybe the map feature didn't like my address & cleared it out... still get the same message, in both IE (6.0, I think) and Firefox 1.5.0.1.
[attachment deleted by admin]

Hmm, I cannot recreate the error. Anyone else getting this when they cahnge stuff on their profile?

No problem at all on Macs. Either Safari or Firefox. I got the pin right on my front deck.
Hmm. I beg to differ. Being stuck in a timewarp - as I am - I'm still using Mac OS9 and I can't even get to see the map, let alone stick a pin in it. But I'm not that bothered since I do identify my location in my profile. :)
-
Hmm, I cannot recreate the error.
I'm certainly not running the most recent XP service pack, so the problem could be there. I'll try flushing the cache...
Edit: clearing the cache changes nothing... definitely looks like it's related to my OS version.
-
No problems with Firefox 1.5 on Win 2000.

Hello!
It just occurred to me that the Member map showed my old location out in Minnesota so I thought now would be a good time to update things, but I can't for the life of me figure out how to change map locations. I don't see any editing options on the map page. I did try clicking on the phrase "Click here to place your pin if you have not already" but that only led me to my forum profile info, still with no option for editing my map location. Any suggestions from the Map Lords?
-
Hi Doc, it looks like a component of the member map is not working -- clicking on the edit is supposed to take you to your profile where you could edit/delete you pin - but it is not displaying the map in the profile. I'll look into it when I get some time.
Thanks,

Hi Doc, it looks like a component of the member map is not working -- clicking on the edit is supposed to take you to your profile where you could edit/delete you pin - but it is not displaying the map in the profile. I'll look into it when I get some time.
Thanks,
slack
I ran into the same problem this morning. Wasted a few minutes going backwards & forwards trying to pinpoint where I was going wrong.
Will it get fixed?
-
Old author gave it up -- but new author has taken it over, so it looks like the map may be supported again. I've installed the new version, looks like it works -- but give it a try.

~~~~ time passes ~~~~
The member map is working pretty well these days, and WC.com has become more international, click to see the wwww: http://weeniecampbell.com/yabbse/index.php?action=googlemap
But it would be great if more of you would stick your pins. Fewer than 10% have done so. It's easy:
You have to be logged in to do this. Click the top menu button 'Profile'. In the profile page's side menu 'Modify Profile' click 'Forum Profile'. Follow the directions from there.
You don't have to land the pin right on your residence, just the general vicinity would be excellent for getting a feel for where everyone is at.
Kudos to Slack for persevering with it, and duh! to me, since I thought it was a dumb idea at the outset but now think it's a really useful tool for understanding the weenie demographic.
OK as of right now there are 195 pins...
-
201 present, 6 new pins planted today.
Thanks folks, and please keep them coming.
-
I went to the Satellite view and was able to use the highest resolution to zoom right in. Impressive, but now I'm going to have to keep an eye out for that predator drone.
-
That's why I stuck my pin on somebody else's house outside any potential blast zone. Al Young appears to be floating a few miles off NZ's Manukau Harbor, probably trolling for migrating northbound albacore, given the time of year. Been there, done that, happy days. :)
-
Now at 204 member map pins, close to a 5% increase. Please keep sticking them if you haven't already.
As I mentioned, the map is incredibly useful in understanding where the regular members are at. Not surprisingly USA is the densist, UK is also surprisingly dense, as is Oz. Mainland Europe is building up. We clearly have some work to do getting the word out to country blues fans in Africa, India, Russia, China, S. America, and the kiwis... maybe there aren't any more? I doubt that personally.
-
OK good going, we have 20 additional pins, from 195 a month ago to 215 pins placed as of today. Thanks y'all.
If you haven't already done so and feel so inclined please stick your pin in your general vicinity, much appreciated. http://weeniecampbell.com/yabbse/index.php?action=googlemap (http://weeniecampbell.com/yabbse/index.php?action=googlemap)
Currently at 224
I tried to save my location but it seems like it would not be saved. Will try again later.
-
Member map (http://weeniecampbell.com/yabbse/index.php?action=googlemap) is growing nicely, currently 232 pins, up from 195 in December.
-
239 today. Stick yer pins in your general vicinity people, no need to land it on your domicile. It really helps to understand generally where people are coming from.
258 pins are on the map as of today.
If you post on weenie, or listen to the juke, or just read the forum regularly, please take the time to stick your pin in the general vicinity of your home base so we can get an idea of where everyone is at. And thank you. Thank you very much!
Instructions:
You have to be logged in to do this. Click the top menu button 'Profile'. In the profile page's side menu 'Modify Profile' click 'Forum Profile'. Follow the directions from there.
No pressure, it's definitely not compulsory, but it is interesting and helps in some strange way to ensure weenie keeps on truckin'
Cheers ozrkreb, make that 259, much appreciated.
Is the member map not currently working? I went to change my pin and nothing loaded. I thought I might change it through my profile but there seems to no longer be an option to put your location and a couple other things look different to when I last used it. Any suggestions?
-
Unfortunately an upgrade to one of the other server-side services (Tapatalk) broke the member map. In an attempt to remedy we then installed the latest version of Member Map, and it made matters even worse.
I was kinda waiting for someone to notice before going in to bat again to try and fix it, so thank you for the nudge! :P
-
Member Map is back online. All credit to Slack's eagle eye spotting an uncommanded settings change after I updated the package. Please holler if you have any problems with it.
Currently 288 pins. Please feel free to stick your pins.
Excellent. I am now the Supreme Ruler of New Mexico Weenies.
Excellent. I am now the Supreme Ruler of New Mexico Weenies.
With great power comes great responsibility.
-
Thanks for the fix Rivers. I can once again experience a pin clicking trance that lasts for hours.
-
Thanks Rivers and Slack!
-
With great power comes great responsibility.
In the interest of full disclosure, I should point out that I'm also the only New Mexico Weenie.
-
We've got pin clustering going on the member map. High density clusterfurcations of weenies now get displayed with a heat-coded zone counter; as you zoom in they resolve to individual pins, zoom back out and and the clusters reappear. This is not only a triumph of style over substance, it was actually getting kinda crowded on there.
But... we would like for more members to stick their pins so if you feel so inclined please go to the member map page (http://weeniecampbell.com/yabbse/index.php?action=googlemap) and click on the link, or you can click here to add or edit your pin location on the map (http://weeniecampbell.com/yabbse/index.php?action=profile;area=forumprofile). You have to be logged-in to place your pin obviously.
Thanks to Laura for prompting us to get it all sorted out.
-
You're welcome Rivers. I do like the cluster pins - they make it look neater. I'm happy to see Colm and Gumbo are not far from me at all but I wonder if Gumbo really does live in the middle of a lake?.....fascinating!
-
Gumbo could be in a boat or submarine. Generally speaking I wouldn't advocate putting your pin right on your house either, just the general area is fine. Mine's not on my house, just in the neighborhood. We have a few pins in places like Antarctica, Kamchatka and
Baffin Island Svalbard, those are not particularly useful but a source of minor hilarity I guess. :P
-
I'd like to point out that putting your pin on the map is not only neighborly but useful as well. There's a member index on the left hand side of the screen. After a night at the local pub, just bring the map up on your phone, click on your name, and the member map can help you find your way home. ;D
-
Brilliant.
-
...as long as you don't end up in a lake. :P
-
... and there was me thinking it just rained a lot here! :D
-
Last time I looked, I was the only Weenie in my area. Sad, huh?
-
As the old saying goes, "better to be a big fish in a small pond, than a medium size rhinoceros in Safeways". Right?
-
Very very true!
-
Still clicking >:D
-
Is the member map still working? Doesn't seem to work for me.
-
Hi Eric, it looks like it is down for some reason. I'll look into it, thanks for the heads up.
-
FYI Slack,
It very briefly loads the google map of North America, then goes to this message:
Oops! Something went wrong.
This page didn't load Google Maps correctly. See the JavaScript console for technical details.
-
It's actually been down for quite a while. I haven't investigated, thought I'd wait until someone noticed!
Likewise the "Weenies online" map that I built. I think it went down around the same time as the member map.
I'll do some investigating and report back.
-
To get technical for a minute, the Member Map error indicates the API key it's sending to google maps is invalid.
The Who's Online map error indicates it doesn't like us calling out to google using the insecure "http://" URL rather than the secure "https://" one.
I'll take a look at the code.
-
Eric, Google has changed the rules and started monetizing the google map api's in May. The Member Map gets so little use and is of such small value that were are going to take it down. Thanks again for the heads up.
-
Thanks for looking into it, Slack. I appreciate what you guys do to keep the site running.
