Among the blues singers who have gained more or less national recognition, there is scarcely a man's name to be found - Howard Odum and Guy Johnson, 1926

Congratulations on your recording project, Ken! You've got a really nice balance of traditional tunes done your own way and original tunes, and the recorded sound of your guitar is beautiful.
All best,

It's one of those "frame of reference" things. I agree with John, although I'd probably say something like, "recorded in 'the modern era'" and  if there were any questions, explain the reasoning for the choice of wording, like John has done. There can be a lot of hair splitting and nit-picking with this kind of thing, but I prefer to keep it simple.

edited to add: As an aside, remember when a "Golden Oldie" was a hit on AM radio from only a few years ago? Where do the days go?  ;)

Performance Corner / Zoom Classes: Fingerstyle Blues Guitar in Open/Alternate Tunings
« Last post by Johnm on April 01, 2024, 09:13:49 AM »
Hi all,
Zoom Classes Announcement: Fingerstyle Blues Played in Open/Alternate Tunings

In this series of classes, we値l be looking at the open and alternate tunings most commonly used in playing fingerstyle blues guitar, focusing on a different tuning for each class. In the classes, we値l be looking at the playing of the most notable stylists in each tuning, analyzing their approach to the tuning, learning some licks and chord voicings that they used, and taking a look for new possibilities the tuning offers that speak in the style. There will be five classes in this series:

   * Spanish tuning (Open G, DGDGBD)
   * Vestapol tuning (Open D, DADF#AD)
   * EAEGBE tuning
   * DGDGBE tuning
   * Cross-note tuning (Open D minor, DADFAD)

As with the last round of Zoom classes I presented, emphasis will very much be hands-on and working via listening, watching and imitating溶o notation of any sort will be used or presented. The classes will not be focusing on slide guitar playing in these tunings. The first class in the series will be presented Saturday, April 6 at 10:00 AM Pacific Daylight Time. Here is the class description and sign-up information:

Fingerstyle Blues In Spanish (Open G) Tuning

We値l start the class by seeing how the blues scale sits in Spanish tuning and how the I, IV and V7 chords have most commonly been voiced by players of the past. We値l then look at the approach that several of the players who specialized in Spanish tuning took to playing in it用eople like Clifford Gibson, Furry Lewis, Robert Johnson and John Lee Hooker. We値l conclude the class by looking for possibilities that the tuning offers that were not utilized by players of the past but that nonetheless speak in the language of the blues.

The class will be recorded and sent to all participants so you値l be able to review the lesson content. Persons interested in the class who are unable to attend the day it is offered may still purchase it and receive the film of the class. Cost of the class is $40.00. To sign up, make a payment to my account at paypal.com as per the instructions at https://johnmillerguitar.com/teaching.html . Once I致e been notified that payment has been made, I値l send you an invitation. I hope to see you there!

All best,
Johnm

Hi Forgetful Jones,
You make a good point about that "modern" recording being 60 years old. I think that from a musical perspective, speaking of pre-1960 and post-1960 blues recordings is a more useful dividing line for the music than pre-War and post-War is. Post-1960 there was a resurgence of interest in acoustic blues, largely because of the recordings made of "re-discovered" blues musicians, as well as musicians who played acoustically who were being recorded for the first time, like Mance Lipscomb, Shirley Griffith, John Jackson and Frank Hovington, as well as a host of others. Acoustic blues was pretty moribund, commercially speaking, in the 1950s--the original record-buying audience for it had moved on to electric blues, R & B, Do-wop, and other styles.

Thanks! Your wisdom and expertise are always appreciated.
Here's where I hear the "the":
[muffled] Georgia sun...west
The Georgia sun...

As for "Bamalong," there's not much like a "g" at the end of the word (though it could be swallowed); sounds more like "Bamalon." Also, for most speakers, the o is different in a word like "long" as opposed to "Lon" (e.g. Chaney), and the o here sounds a bit more like "lon"

Hi John-
I hadn't heard that in a while. What a voice and what seriously strong playing! I had to listen multiple times. I find it funny that this "modern" recording is 60 years old. I've taken some guff from friends when I've used the same term.
Cheers

A few weeks ago, Andy Cohen's Riverlark Music released an album of guitar instrumentals I recorded and I thought some of you would enjoy hearing it. I have a great deal of respect for this site, this music and the community of people that keep it going; I have learned a lot from hanging out here over the years and would love to have your feedback.
