Hersal Thomas was (one of) the finest guys I ever knew... We came up together, in Chicago... He taught me everything I know... He was the master of all pianists in those days... King of the boogie woogie... These rocks the way he would play 'em... Really sad he didn't live... Today he would be king... He knew everything, this boy from Texas... O.K Hersal this is for you, wherever you are - Dan Burley, Hersal's Rocks

Thanks! I've seen one picture of him where it looked like he was playing a Fred Van Eps Recording model banjo. I think they were made by Lyon & Healy. They had an aluminum resonator in the back (between the dowel stick and the head) and the dowel stick was carved to account for the resonator. The heads used for those banjos actually had a hole in them. In this picture:
it's kinda hard to tell, but it looks like he might be holding Buckbee. If you're just looking for a banjo to play Gus Cannon tunes on, I'd think any period open-back would do just fine. My thoughts exactly, especially Buckbee, which he is clearly holding.
Er, who exactly is Buckbee? I was thinking maybe an invisible Chihuahua. Ah wait, I googled, a Buckbee banjo. I'm sorry, I couldn't resist it. zoner
Thanks guys...just picked up a Lyon & Healy Professional, which I think will work just fine.
