Christopher King - 'Unearthly Laments'
« on: April 21, 2017, 09:46:35 AM »
Hi all,
I'm sure Christopher King has been discussed here before. He's a man of many talents and interests though mostly known to us through his work transferring 78s to be re-released by labels such as County, JSP, Third Man, and others.

Here's a link to a short profile on him and his work:

I've got a couple of the collections he's put together of early Greek recordings and have enjoyed his liner notes which are a mix of musicology, history, and philosphy and always manage to weave disparate elements into a satisfying and intriguing whole. He's got a book slated for release sometime this year titled 'Lament From Epirus' which focuses on early Greek music. In my latest searching for an update on the status of the book I found that the Oxford American has posted an article which is adapted from one of the chapters in the book. I've just started reading but have already really enjoyed it. His inclusion of some background on the recordings of Blind Willie Johnson (as well as King's own story of discovering Johnson's recordings) made me think of everyone here and so I thought I'd share.

And here's a track from his latest collection of early Greek music:

It's wonderful what you've shared about King, I hope he puts out more Albanian stuff, music is something that brings out energy in my grandmother like nothing else and I gave my grandparents a compilation of Albanian music from Robert Garfias which was well received by them, unlike my other (Australian) grandfather, they don't have the easy option of countless compilations of 20s, 30s and 40s recordings in their native language, so I love whatever I can get.
Confident that I'm probably almost definitely the youngest record label owner in my street

The New York Review of Books posted a review of King's just released book 'Lament from Epirus: An Odyssey into Europe?s Oldest Surviving Folk Music'. They also discuss his soon to be released collection of the music of Kitsos Harisiadis, a Greek musician captured on 78s in the late 1920s/early 1930s. And finally they make mention of a forthcoming documentary, 'While You Live, Shine' featuring King and delving into the Greek music he's so fond of.

The review is here:
