Title: Boogie beat
Post by: magicfingers on October 05, 2006, 01:18:07 PM
I'm trying to find some good instructional dvd or cd of the boogie-type of blues rhythm: as in some John Lee Hooker (boogie chillin'), Canned Heat, or ZZ Top (LaGrange?).
I see that Del Ray has some boogie on her cd, but I don't know if it's the percussive type I'm thinking of.
I'm not a very experienced player (about 3 years) and have been having trouble getting that combination of string muting and backbeat strumming to flow.
Any help out there?
Thanks,
Magicfingers

Hi Magic
Del Rey's Boogie Woogie gives instruction and pays tribute to boogie woogie piano players.  This is a very challenging lesson, and amazing to observe.  Del's guitar playing is magnificent.  I believe you can watch a sample on the Homespun website.

It really doesn't have much to do with John Lee Hooker, ZZTop or Canned Heat.

Hope this helps.

Bob

Hi Magicfingers
Put your guitar in spanish (open G) tuning, lightly rest the heel of your right palm on the bass strings and gently (?) flail away until you hit the beat. Once you get the touch there's nothing to it. Listen to lots of John Lee Hooker first, of course!

Bob's right about Del Rey, her playing is nothing short of miraculous - I  saw her in concert a couple of weeks ago with Steve James (he's pretty miraculous too) here in the UK and was completely knocked out. Definitely a must see if you get half a chance.
Good luck with the boogie,
Congerman

Hi Bob B and Congerman,
Thanks for the input. It matched what I suspected. 1. Del Reys DVD wasn't the answer, and 2. Ya just have to play at it until you get it.
Here I go for a few more miles on the strings.
Thanks again Weenies.
