Negros must stop the deluge of filth, which makers of records are marketing among them. The music of the 'Blues' is one thing, but whether good or bad, it is indefensible to put to it all the stench which ingenuity can drag out the under-world and camouflage with words of double meaning. Don't buy them! Don't go to people's houses who do buy them! Don't permit your race newspaper to bear that name and at the same time advertise flagrant immorality set to music. Do anything, do everything, filthy records must go. - Roy Wilkins, (attrib.) editorial in the December 31 1926 edition of the Kansas City Call, probably written by the man who ironically went on to head up the NAACP

Euro weenie quiz
« on: April 06, 2011, 08:47:18 AM »
I thought I'd post the quiz set for the Euroweenies. If you feel like having a go, you have 20 minutes and no reference books. Mark yourself honestly and see if you can beat Eurochamp Prof.Scratchy's score. One point for each individual answer. Post your score but not your answers. Answers in a couple of weeks.

1.  give the better-known names for;
Jimmy Eager
Sluefoot Joe
Sammy Sampson
Bessie Jackson
2. These siblings played 12-string in Atlanta. Real names and noms de disque
3.  One of the few pre-war artists we know played left-handed
4.  What is the connection between a Govenor of Louisiana and the Lone Wolf?
5.  Eddie Anthony and Henry Williams were members of whose gang?
6.  He vocalised the sound or he plucked the strings behind Tommy MClennan, Lonnie Johnson, Sonny Boy Williamson, Big Joe, Washboard Sam and many others.
7.  He picked low cotton and wanted to die easy in 1933
8. He composed "Duck's Yas Yas Yas", "Pat That Thing", "Precious Lord", "Peace in the Valley". Who was he and who was he "tight" with in 1928?
9.  Vocalion 1191 allegedly sold a million in 1928 for who? (Hint, he recorded 5 more versions)
10. His full real name never appeared on  a record label but he was featured on nearly 90
sides. Married well and his brother was known to play a little mandolin.
11. For jazz orientated amongst us, this singer recorded with Tommy Ladnier, Louis
Armstrong, Charlie Green, Johnny Dodds, Kid Ory etc....... Clue - See See Rider.
12.Four siblings who all recorded pre-war. Name them all.
13.He was a hard pushing papa with the early morning blues.
14.Who, apart from Big Bill Broonzy, recorded ?Big Bill Blues??
15.Whoʼs feet were featured on a record label and in the adverts in the Chicago Defender.
16.Whoʼs ?Bull Dog Blues? was a virtual remake of George Washingtonʼs ?Richmond
Blues??
17.Whatʼs another connection between the two artists above? (more than one possible
correct answer).
18.Recorded in the 30ʼs, 40ʼs and 50ʼs and was baby sitter to Eddie Taylor. Reference to
Question 10 may help (or not!).
0-5 - dunce! 5-10 - Not much better! 10-18 - Log on to WC more! 18 plus - BGR swot!

Good luck! and remember that I was under the influence of Aberlour single malt at the time so I accept no blame..........

Oh no! Does this mean my substantial prize could be in jeopardy?

Only if you are prepared to pay postage to the colonies. I think we can safely say it will remain solidly at home, they don't deserve such an important  piece of British history in any case.

Tough quiz. I suspect the substantial prize is safe. From me, at least.

So you get fractions of a point for each name in question 1 and not a point for each name?

Sorry to pepper you with questions, but does this mean we're supposed to be under the influence of a single malt scotch when we answer, or will bourbon or rye do?

Seriously, I've written down my answers and posted them over my desk at work.  I promise to post my score after the answers are given.  (I'd post it now, but then I'd be in the embarrassing position of lopping my posted score in half when the correct answers appear!)

Richard got a half point for clearly identifying a person without the name. Common decency prevents me from telling what he said.

Nope Gumbo, it's your round!

Bourbon will work at about 50% the rate of Aberlour I suspect.

Never give up, never surrender.

I figure if i put Big Bill Broonzy for all the answers i'll get at least 1 point.

Apart from Q14 of course.
