Forum Upgrade
« on: July 04, 2005, 07:14:56 PM »
Upgraded the forum software this evening from 1.03 to 1.1pBeta3.  Also upgraded the "bridging" software (which ties SMF, the forum to Mambo, the content manager).  Who cares?  Right, just keep your eyes peeled for any errors. ;)

Thanks,
slack

Not an error, but I miss the "Unread Posts" subhead under the Forum link on the left side of the page.  Is it possible to bring that back?

Right - wonder what happened to it?!  There is a "Show Unread posts..." under the login form to use while I get things fixed.

Thanks for the heads up.

Hi John D.,
I think all that may be needed to get the "show unread posts" sign back is for people to re-log on.  Last night, after you had done the upgrade, I came to the site and missed that button.  I was going to send a message to tell you it was gone, and was informed that I needed to log on to send a personal message.  Once I logged on, I got the function back.  The same thing may work for other folks.  I think somehow or other the upgrade erased permanent log-ons.
All best,
Johnm

Hi John,

I've added back in the "Unread Posts" under the Forum menu option - so all should see this now after they logon.

And you are right, folks that were logged in "forever" will need to log back in.

thanks!,

I miss the Members Map. Whatever became of it?

Hi Alex, I do too.

At the risk of telling you more than you want to know. :D The Members Map is poorly supported.... it has not been updated since last November.  So the problem is, since this is a modification of the forum software ---  that when the forum is upgraded it most often breaks any modifications made to the forum.  So, my philosophy is that a modification, even the beloved Member Map, should not hold us back from upgrading the forum - which is a major component of the website.  I always keep my eye peeled for an improved or upgraded Member Map and I still keep the exisitng database of "pins" and locations - but again the history of that SMF modification has been poor (these darn kid programmers act so irresponsibly! ;) ).  What I'd like to find is a Mambo component that offers a similar thrill as it is much easier to maintain Mambo modifications.    I'll keep looking.

Cheers,
slack

I had to re-log-in again. Using Firefox I tried my pasword, wouldn't work, changed p/w, still no dice, get message "check your cookie settings". Can log in using IE6 though.

You might try deleting your WC cookies in Firefox.

I too was having no luck logging on using Firefox, but deleted my WC cookies as suggested and then was able to log on no problem.  As said, never had a problem with IE.

Actually, I noticed a few days ago that I could not log out on my laptop, but could on my desktop? Or I may have been partially logged out as the lower member menu was gone as was the unread posts link under the forum link. However I still had a logout box with show unread posts link. That seems to have been corrected by the upgrade, but now, whenever I try to use my back button to go to the unread posts page, I get asked to log in again, with a message stating that only members can view that page? But if I scroll back up to the top of the page and use the link, no problem. Using Safari AYK.

All for now.

Hi JohnC,

These are cookie problems - try deleting your WC Safari cookies and see if that helps.  Also interested to see if the upgrade fixed the "new" button problem you were having.

Deleted all WC cookies, twice, still going to Log In page (both content area and right column) only when using back button to "unread posts since last visit", not, for instance when I use it to go back to "all unread posts".

Blue "new" buttons still not working consistently. I also noticed a "last post" button failing (on this thread).

Am I the only one in Safari having these issues?

All for now.

OK, just checked. Blue "new" buttons, "last post" icon buttons, and links in Recent Posts, all hanging at top of page. I'll check later on my desktop.

All for now.
