This reminded me about a controversial TV appearance by Ben Vereen performing in blackface.   I'd forgotten the details and did some searching and found an LA Times article from last year dealing with it (see the link below).  It's about an "experimental play"which revisits "Vereen?s performance before President-elect Ronald Reagan at the 1981 inaugural gala."
