So I asked him to play "Trav'lin' All Alone." That came closer than anything to the way I felt. And some part of it must have come across. The whole joint quieted down. If someone had dropped a pin, it would have sounded like a bomb. When I finished, everybody in the joint was crying in their beer, and I picked thirty-eight bucks up off the floor - Billie Holiday, 1915-1959

Virginia Traditions/Blue Ridge Institute recordings
« on: June 09, 2015, 03:08:45 PM »
Johnm just posted a song by James Lowry from the Virginia Traditions in the "what is this musician doing?" thread. This reminded me that the Virginia Traditions series of CDs is now being offered by Smithsonian Folkways as custom CDs or downloads. These had become harder to find, so good news. There's some great music on the ones I've heard. More info here:

The series of LPs from back in the day, all (Black and White) are excellent - produced by Kip Lornell and Roddy Moore mainly from BRI material. (the Pernell Charity cuts are from me.)

As Peter will appreciate, being an old Virginia boy, I like the way they separated out the regions of the state in putting together the records. More stuff to put on the list.
