About Weenie

Preserving Country Blues through Education, Performance and Technology.

Welcome to WeenieCampbell.com, the site devoted to Country Blues. Weenie Campbell began in August 1997, when a few Port Townsend Country Blues Workshop participants who wanted to stay in touch created an email listserv in order to keep the spirit of the workshop alive throughout the year. A separate small website was also set up in order to exchange workshop photos and store lyrics. In January 2001, the email list and website content moved to Yahoo Groups.

Then in May 2003, in order to better foster the preservation and appreciation of Country Blues and to include other enthusiasts from around the world, a custom website and forum were created. The website was expanded in June 2004 with an internet radio station called Weenie Juke Radio, which broadcasts Country Blues (mostly) 24 hours a day. In March 2008 we installed a wiki, Weeniepedia, to serve as our repository for country blues reference content, lyrics and musical analysis collated from content developed on the forum.

The name for the email list and subsequent website was taken from the 1997 Port Townsend Participants Concert. A group of faculty noticed that the night of the participants concert was drawing near and no one had signed up to perform. Some thought this was a blessing. But the faculty took it upon themselves to encourage the participants by entering the first name on the list. The late Jimmy Borsdorf offered Blind Weenie Campbell, and so a gleeful group of faculty entered the performer in the first slot and others soon followed (disappointingly, BWC never showed up). The name was later shortened to Weenie Campbell and among the membership the term Weenie has become synonomous with Country Blues enthusiast. The name Weenie Campbell is also a reminder that, no matter how much of an enthusiast one might be, it is difficult to adopt an overly serious attitude if you call yourself a Weenie.

A narrow focus on Country Blues, a knowledgeable and international forum membership, Weenie Juke Radio and Weeniepedia make WeenieCampbell.com a unique internet destination. We welcome anyone with an interest in Country Blues. Thanks for visiting and enjoy your stay!

Cordially Yours,
Weenie Campbell
