The Bluesmen (1963)
« on: September 04, 2020, 03:21:57 PM »
I've recently run across references to a film called "The Bluesmen" from 1963, in which Pink Anderson, presumably among others, performed. I can't find a copy or a definitive reference to this film anywhere after a couple of hours of trying, and I'm curious if any of you have run across this film, or can point me towards a link? Thanks as always for your help!

In the links section of the Wikipedia page for Pink there’s a link to to an IMDb page for Pink. On that page a movie titled The Blues is listed with a link to the IMDb page, which lists about 10 artists who were included and shows that Sam Charters was the director.

Hi Jake:

It's possible that some of the information and titles of Sam Charters' work and publications from the 60s (and later) have been conflated, mislabeled, etc. The film, "The Blues," and the Folkways / Asch LP of the same title were recorded and filmed in 1962, IIRC.

https://folkways.si.edu/the-blues-music-from-the-documentary-film-by-sam-charters/soundtracks-musicals/album/smithsonian

The film was recently re-released by Document in a set with a different title:

https://thedocumentrecordsstore.com/product/sam-charters-searching-for-secret-heroes/

And the book, The Bluesmen: The Story and the Music of the Men Who Made the Blues, was published in 1967 by Oak which was one of Moses Asch's enterprises.

As you can see the original material was revised and reorganized, added to etc.

I did a little searching and I can see how looking for the film with the title, "The Bluesmen," (1963) would lead one to conclude that was the title of the film. (And it very well may have been a working title that the film was shown under.) For example:

https://www.greenvilleonline.com/story/life/2015/02/01/black-history-month-pink-anderson-bluesmen/22227765/

My guess is that "The Bluesmen" and "The Blues" are the same film.

Like others who post here, I picked up "The Blues" Folkways LP back in the late 60s or early 70s along with Sam Charters' "The Country Blues" Folkways LP. And the 1967 edition of The Bluesmen... is around here somewhere.

I recommend the recent Document re-release set if you don't already have it.
