In a blog essay posted on the Web site of The American Scholar before Mr. Mitchell's death, Mr. Zinsser said Mr. Mitchell's approach to broken-down pianos (which musicians sometimes encounter on tour) illustrated his approach to life. "I learned long ago that it does no good to complain," Mr. Zinsser recalled Mr. Mitchell telling him. Instead, listen to the keys and put their flatness or sharpness to use. "You say, 'What does it do?' " said Mr. Mitchell, sounding an imaginary clinker on a piano. " 'Will it do anything? Let's check it out' - NY Times obit, reference to http://theamericanscholar.org/what-does-it-do/#.Uj3ivWR4ZEu

« on: March 04, 2023, 01:23:25 PM »
Hi all,
I wanted to let you know that a book I wrote recently, "The Memphis Blues Guitar of Furry Lewis", is now available at Stefan Grossman's website via this link: https://www.guitarvideos.com/stefan-grossmans-guitar-workshop-online-store#!/Memphis-Blues-Guitar-of-Furry-Lewis/p/523134564/category=0 . The book has transcriptions of twenty of Furry's recorded performances, fifteen from the '20s and five from the 1961 sessions he did in Memphis that came out on Prestige Bluesville. Here is a list of the tunes in the book, with playing position/tuning indicated for each song.
   * Billy Lyons and Stack O'Lee--C position, standard tuning
   * Kassie Jones, Part 1--Spanish tuning
   * Why Don't You Come Home Blues--Spanish tuning, slide
   * Good Looking Girl Blues--Spanish tuning
   * Dry Land Blues--E position, standard tuning
   * Big Chief Blues--Vestapol tuning
   * Falling Down Blues--Vestapol tuning, slide
   * Jelly Roll--EAEGBE tuning
   * I Will Turn Your Money Green, Take 1--Spanish tuning
   * Judge Harsh Blues, Take 1--Vestapol tuning, slide
   * Furry's Blues--Spanish tuning
   * Mistreatin' Mama--EAEGBE tuning
   * John Henry, 1--Vestapol tuning, slide
   * Black Gypsy Blues--Spanish tuning
   * Creeper's Blues--EAEGBE tuning
   * Frankie and Johnnie--G position, standard tuning
   * Done Changed My Mind--E position, standard tuning
   * Old Blue--Spanish tuning, thumb lead
   * Going To Brownsville, Spanish tuning, slide
   * White Lightnin'--EAEGBE tuning
Downloadable links to the original performances from which the transcriptions were made are included in the book, as well as lyrics for all the songs and playing tips. There is also a biographical essay on Furry by Tyler Fritts, who did his doctoral dissertation on Furry. The book is available in hard copy or downloadable versions.
All best,
Johnm
