RB, the Rev. died in '72.

Pan and Nicolas, thanks for the link to the review. News of footage from Newport is exciting. If it is the same performance as the record, he was on fire.

Thank you, Uncle Bud, 1972, the year I gave up listening to all that stuff and moved to where I have been since, forty-one years ago.

Davis' dates, I now know, were 1896 to 1972 a fairly long life.  An internet link says he died in Hammonton, New Jersey and elaborates

"He died of a Heart attack on his way to a performance"

His life was a performance and, so far as I can tell, was very well done, much better than most.

Quote
the film noted here is co-directed by Simeon Hutner, whose family I have known in a few connections fairly well for many years.  I didn't know this fellow was particularly interested in this music (I myself think Reverend Davis was the greatest, though I didn't think so back then) though I did know he was interested in photography and I have a book (of poems by his deceased sister) that is illustrated with his photographs.

That's from my note on this subject of Nov 12, of last year.  I saw Simeon at his 95 year old mother's funeral, here in Vermont, a few weeks ago, but did not get to talk to him about this work.

This item does not ship to Canada".

Is it just me, or has everything about this project ended up being screwy?

Maybe there are distribution rights issues, but I don't really know. FYI, Rolly Brown wrote the Amazon review.

"Screwy"??--That sums up most of what I encounter in the modern world. In her book, Amanda Petrusich commented that one of the things that draws people to old music is that the state of the modern world is viewed as untenable. When things seem tenable and non-screwy, I become suspicious...

If you want a copy Andrew, I'm sure that we'll find a way.

You can get this doc as a direct download from Homespunvideos website. You can download the same player that Stefan Grossman's guitar workshop uses with it's direct downloads. You get all the DVD bonus features as well. I hope the video from the Newport Folk Festival is released as well as the rare footage of the Rev in Montreal Canada.
