Lightnin' Hopkins couldn't play without his sunglasses. But the reason for that is Lightnin' Hopkins was extremely cross-eyed. He wasn't tryin' to be cool - Jerry Ricks, Port Townsend 97

I just bought a great record of Leroy Carr songs and it has a fantastic tune on it called Arlena. Does anyone have an arrangement of it, they could share? Kind of reminds me of the chord progression of Got a Mind to Ramble by Merline Johnson....am I way off

Hi Santa Cruzer, and welcome to Weenie Campbell!

Arlena is a very nice song, thanks for bringing it to our attention!

Here's roughly how I hear the chord changes (corrections are welcome).

Intro:
|| G7 | G7 | F F7 Bb Bbm | F ||

A1
||: F | F | G7 | G7 |

| C7 | C7 | F G7 | Gm7 C7 ||

A2
||F | F | G7 | G7 |

| C7 | C7 | F F7 Bb Bbm | F (F7) ||

B
|| Bb7 | Bb7 | Bb7 | Bb7 |

| G7 | G7 | C7 | C7 || (2nd time to coda)

A3
|| F | F | G7 | G7 |

| C7 | C7 |  F F7 Bb Bbm | F  :|| (repeat with solos on A1 & A2)

CODA
A4
||  F | F | G7 | G7 |

| C7 | C7 | F G7 | Gm7 C7 | F F7 Bb Bbm | F C7 ||

A5
|| F | F | G7 | G7 |

| C7 | C7 |  F F7 Bb Bbm | F  ||

Note that the A4 section after the solos and the sung B-part has 10 bars in it, which might be a bit confusing at first.

Here's the take 1 on YouTube. It's pitched at F#, but the same recording with both takes is pitched at F on Spotify, so I'm fairly sure that the YouTube video is sped up.

Here's take 2, pitched at F:

Anyone care to try the lyrics? :)

Cheers

Hi all,

I'm trying to figure out the lyrics, but have trouble with the 3rd line especially. Any other corrections are also welcome. Here's what I've got (for take 1) so far:

Arlena,
Mama, please don't leave me,
Not for teasing,
Baby the one that loves you.

While you told me,
baby, that you love me,
Please don't fail me honey,
For somebody new.

Oh, you taught me to learn to love you,
Mama, what more can I do?
I want no one, no one, no one,
I want no one  but you.

Well, Arlena,
Hear my pleading,
Mama, I'll always be the one,
Waiting there for you.

Solos

Oh, you taught me to learn to love you, baby,
What more can I do?
Well, I want no one, no one, no one,
I want no one  but you.

Well, Arlena,
Hear my pleading,
Mama, I'll always be the one,
Waiting there for you.
I'll be waiting there for you.

Arlena,
Please don't leave me,
Not for teasing,
Baby the one that loves you.

Thank you for any help!

Cheers

Pan

Third line sound a lot like "not for teasing", and the line in the next verse sounds like "don't fail me", though I can't say that either phrase quite reads right in that interpretation.
