White people have no business playing the blues ever, at all, under any circumstances. Ever, ever, ever. What the f--- do white people have to be blue about? Banana Republic ran out of khakis? - George Carlin

Georgia Yellow Hammers - Come Over and See Me Sometime
« on: July 19, 2012, 02:03:28 PM »
Here's what I've got - any suggestions for the missing lines?  I'm attaching the recording.  I have always liked this song and decided to finally learn it, but I'm stumped by some of the lines - took that gentleman down??  Really????  Here is "Come Over And See Me Sometime":

Won?t you come over and see me some time
Won?t you come over and see me some time
Eat your breakfast ?fore you come
Bring your dinner in your hand
And leave before suppertime

I walked out the other night
The stars were shining bright
I spied a great big possum boys
Well he was out of sight.

Well I went home and I got my axe
And I took that gentleman (?) down
Oh won?t we have a dinner boys
When the possum hits the ground

I asked that girl would she marry me
And what do you reckon she said
She said I wouldn?t marry you (??)
If all the rest is dead

Old master had a little old mule
And he rode him down to town
We swapped him off for a big old horse
And took ???

The southern people are very ???
The country and the town
But when they bake a corn bread
It certainly is baked brown

Them northern people ???
They ?all the jack
They can?t make time to eat a meal
They?d rather (??)   have a snack

1.3 Eat your breakfast 'fore you START

3.2 I CUT that gentleman down (talking about the tree I think)

4.3 She sayI'll ---- nah just kidding I'm baffled

5.4 He could not plough his ground

7.1 Them Northern people are very FAST
7.2 they CERTAIN TO BALL the jack
7.3 They can't TAKE time to eat a meal
7.4 They ONLY HAVE a snack

Couple of suggestions

4.3-4.4
She said, I'm a-pleasure to marry you
When all the rest are dead

6.1
SLOW is the missing word (sounds like he choked a bit)
6.3
When they bake a PONE OF bread

Also, if you want more/different verses Rev. Gary Davis recorded a version of this song that goes on for five minutes on his "Children of Zion" album (the one reissued on the blue-covered CD just called "Reverend Gary Davis").

1.3 & 3.2: I agree with Gumbo.

4.3 I agree with banjochris, but I hear "is" clearly on 4.4, rather than "are.".
5.4: That could not plow his ground.
6.: The southern  people are mighty slow,
In country or in town.
But when they bake the corn bread
It certainly is baked brown.
7.: Them northern people are very fast,
They really ball the jack.
Can't take time to eat a meal,
Well, they only have a snack.

I look forward to hearing your version.

Mistyped -- I agree it's "is" -- also listening again I'm hearing corn bread also in 6.3.
