I'm sorry to be so low getting to "Mary Come On Home"--I've been stuck in Bo Carter land lately.
Here is what I'm hearing, relative to the changes that have already been suggested. 1.1 I'm hearing "started' 1.2 I would delete "as" between "soon" and "I" 2.1 I agree with the added "I" after "Mary" 2.2 I would change "killed" to "kill" 3.2 I agree with the correction of the typo, "the" to "she" 3.3 in first line of chorus, change "she want to" to "she won't" 5.1 I agree with changing "starin'" to "Stanton". I would change "all around" to "all 'round"
Let me know what you think about these, and I'll edit the lyrics so we can move on with more Sleepy John songs. Thanks!

At the risk of adding more confusion, I originally couldn't decide if he was singing "sighing" (but sung like a single syllable), or "sign"--as in "I can't believe that you're giving me a sign that you want to be all mine."
Sighing it is, unless someone else weighs in.

Re-listening today, I'm hearing "sighing" every time. Thanks for the suggestion, Lindy, and I will make that change.

Hi John:
FWIW, I hear "sighin'" on the YouTube recording you posted the link to, but I hear "tryin'" on the three different releases I have in my iTunes library. One is from the album, "Baby, How Can It Be?", one I downloaded from Juneberry78s years ago and the other is from "The Essential Bo Carter."
Same computer, same speakers, same deteriorating listening ability.
As Always,
Stuart

Hi Lindy, I noticed an odd sound at the front end but upon re-listening it seemed pretty clear that "tryin'" is what Bo was singing, especially since the "ry" sound is very clear, and that absolutely doesn't work with an "s" in front of it..

Question on "Baby, How Can It Be?" On the fourth line of each verse, it seems to me that he's singing something other than "trying"--I hear a sibilant /s/ at the beginning, but I can't offer a guess at an actual word.
It could be "sighing" but pronounced "sighn" (long "I"), or "sign." Neither one makes sense, but "tryin'" does. Anyone else hear that /s/ sound?

Hi all, Bo Carter recorded "Baby, How Can It Be?" at a session in Atlanta on October 25, 1931, and he was joined by Lonnie on fiddle for this number as well, working in Bb as was most often the case when Bo recorded with Lonnie. This is really a pretty song, and it has some real surprises, going to the relative minor, G minor for the bridge and working its way back to Bb. Moreover, it's an unusual AAB form, not doing a final A as would have most Pop songs of the era. Here is "Baby, How Can It Be":
INTRO FIDDLE SOLO
Baby, how can it be? Baby, how can it be? I'll never believe, that you belong to me Babe, I'm doubtful in mind, babe, I'm doubtful in mind I don't believe you're sighin', just to be all mine Now listen, baby, my love is like a love vine, growing and squeezing a little all the time I'll keep you happy, always in mind, if you will come and just be mine
Baby, how can it be? Baby, how can it be? I'll never believe, that you belong to me Babe, I'm doubtful in mind, babe, I'm doubtful in mind I don't believe you're sighin', just to be all mine Now listen, baby, I'm tellin' you what'll do, I'll get you a Graftonola, a radio, too I'll keep you happy, always in mind, if you will come and just be mine
Baby, how can it be? Baby, how can it be? I'll never believe, that you belong to me Babe, I'm doubtful in mind, babe, I'm doubtful in mind I don't believe you're sighin', just to be all mine
FIDDLE SOLO ON BRIDGE
Baby, how can it be? Baby, how can it be? I'll never believe, that you belong to me

I recently had a visit from the excellent Veronica Sbergia and Max De Bernardi and got to make a couple of videos with Max for his Max picks YouTube channel. Here's Joe McCoy's I'm Through With You. https://youtu.be/BgjyDwA8BJI?si=TLePniCyc-ecB0Jk
