From then on in, me and Sonny started makin' records. My first records, Sonny was backin' me up. Sonny wasn't singin' natural at the time; he was singin' falsetto - Brownie McGhee

Surf music is one of my guilty pleasures.  This guy was an original and influenced a lot of players.  Here, he turns a Lebanese folk song into a instrumantal surf hit.

Thank you, Eric. He was a surfer who just happened to be a great guitar player. I don't think there was a kid growing up by the ocean who wasn't enthralled by his music. I remember seeing him in a video where he talked about surfing, his guitar playing, musical influences,  etc. It might have been a surfing video (one of my guilty pleasures). Here are a couple of links to obits that are a little closer to the bone:

R.I.P. Dick. May all your waves be perfect.

I saw him perform about 25 years ago at the Majestic Theater in Detroit, and it was a tremendous show. Never saw a guitarist go through so many flat picks! He was one of those musicians for whom the word "influential" really and truly applies.

I grew up in Newport Beach, home of the Rendezvous Ballroom where Dick Dale and the Del Tones played. I was too young to get inside, but my friends and I would ride our bikes down the peninsula and stand out side.

The amount of sound coming through the wall was awesome, in the true meaning of the world. And every time the door opened we would catch a glimpse of Dale and the band. It was just about the most inspiring thing a kid could see.

Within a couple years I was in a surf band, and I've never stopped playing music since.

"Miserlou" was one of the first 45s I bought, followed by the LP "Surfer's Choice." Still got 'em.

Incidentally, Dale sang some R&B like Buster Brown's "Fanny Mae" on that record. Did a fine job of it, too.

So thanks Dick Dale. Hope to see you in the celestial line up some day.
