Poor Boy Blues (Ramblin' Thomas)
« on: January 24, 2012, 09:39:24 PM »
I've been enjoying listening to this on the Harry Smith Anthology of American Folk Music lately & thought I'd give it a try.  It's pretty well out of my range stylistically, but fun to play and (attempt) to sing.

I'm using a John Pearse "The Edge" slide on this, which is supposed to be kind of like a straight razor.  It's shaped so as to be easy to hold between ring & little finger for playing slide upright, but I like it for lap style better.  It's basically just a nice shiny piece or brass. My current theory is that some of the fast vibrato you here by folks like Ramblin' Thomas and esp. Blind Willie Johnson is not so much a fast hand movement, but rather a knife or razor that is held at one end -- it's easier to ge that other end moving quite fast.  (I'm not really doing much of that here, and in fact, I'm only holding the bar at the end in the first part of the song).

Very nice indeed!

Always loved Ramblin' Thomas, that guy was really something, so was his brilliant little brother. Nice performance.
