waitin' for a "Factory Girl"
« on: August 17, 2010, 06:40:08 PM »
I've been at this acoustic blues thing for a while, but somebody finally pushed me onto the youtube.  I just knocked this and another one out last week, and am about to get to some Robert Johnson etc....  I'd appreciate anybody having a look and posting their comments.   Thanks!!

Nice one Carlos and welcome to the world of Weenie Campbell. Is that the Steve James arrangement? He certainly did a similar version recently.

Undoubtedly not all Weenies will agree, but I think that Messrs. Jagger & Richards have written some great blues songs. Apart from "Factory Girl", both "The Spider and the Fly" and "Parachute Woman" offer great blues imagery in terms of lyrics.

What's the guitar by the way?

Hey Thanks Parlor Picker,

Yeah, you spotted it.  Steve James was here with me in Guatemala for almost two weeks in March.  To promote his concerts, he sent me some copies of his latest album which included Factory Girl. When I heard that, I just knew that I had to do that one.  I listened to it a few times and then tried to get my own take on it, which is admittedly similar to his....I did say that on my youtube blurb.

I can understand different purists point of view on country blues and that some would not include the rolling stones.  Oh well, I just like those old 60's stones....whatever the heck you call it.  And that arrangement is certainly in the style with the thump thump alternating bass.

Steve and I are talking about a guitar instruction camp next year, here at Blind Lemon's on Lake Atitlan in Guatemala.  I first met him, Paul Rishell, and Del Ray in 1994 when I wondered into the life changing experience of studying with these guys at the Swananoa Gathering in NC.  I came with a D-28....that guitar did not last long after that!  The guitar in that video is a Recording King ROS 626.  I've got the picture of Blind Lemon in my restaurant here and kept wanting a 12 fret like he is playing, but not wanting to pay 3 or 4 grand for the Martin.  This guitar is great....beautiful workmanship....plays like a classical....sometimes I think it is in my hands.  "I called up China, and found my good guitar over dere!"

Thanks for the welcome.....happy to be here....and I appreciate everyone that's had a look!

Well Dang!  You certainly made my day!  I have sure chewed up my bandwidth down here watching and downloading your videos over the last couple of years.  I was just sorting through your page....looking for one that I was really chuffed with.....was it Blue Monk?  Did you film that outside?...or at least with an outdoor sort of back round?  Is there tab for that one....?  I could not find it in the list of videos.

Thanks, your comments deeply appreciated....you sure know how to help a guy!
