Hi all,
It's been a while since we've had a new posting in this Board, but I've been thinking recently how much I like every version I've heard of this song. Lots of Blues players have recorded versions of it in the Post-War period, and of those, the earliest one I have found is John Lee Hooker's version, which he chose to accompany in Spanish tuning, and which his record company titled "Rabbit In A Log". Here it is:

Lonzie Thomas, an Alabaman, was recorded by George Mitchell in the 1970s, and he played it in Vestapol tuning, using the same melody that John Hurt used for "Payday", Henry Thomas for "Shanty Blues" and the Mississippi Sheiks for "Bootlegger's Blues". Lonzie employed a backwards alternation with his picking thumb that allowed him to use it both to keep time and to phrase the melody on the fourth and fifth strings. Here is "Rabbit On A Log":

J. W. Warren, another Alabaman, was similarly recorded by George Mitchell, and his version, accompanied in Vestapol, uses a different melody than both John Lee Hooker's and Lonzie Thomas's. It's a little surprising that none of these three versions share the same melody, despite sharing many of the same verses. Here is J. W. Warren's "Rabbit On A Log":

The song has had a life in the White Old-Time tradition, too, and it seems the most influential version was recorded by Bill and Charlie Monroe as "Feast Here Tonight", on January 28, 1938. The Monroes took the tune at a startling tempo, and Bill's mandolin is just pedal-to-the-metal, as is Charlie's guitar. I love the back and forth in the vocals preceding the conclusion of each verse. Virtually every Country version of the song I could find on YouTube was a straight cover of this version, in melody and energy, though I've yet to hear the Monroes version equaled, at least to my taste. Here is "Feast Here Tonight":

All best,

Performance Corner / Zoom Classes: Fingerstyle Blues in EAEGBE Tuning
« Last post by Johnm on April 29, 2024, 06:58:18 AM »
Hi all,

Fingerstyle Blues in EAEGBE Tuning

The next in this series of Zoom classes on open/alternate tunings used in Country Blues will be held this coming Saturday, May 4, at 10:00 AM Pacific Daylight Time, and will focus on EAEGBE tuning. This tuning is one of the best-kept secrets in fingerstyle blues but has nonetheless had its share of ace practitioners down through the years. We’ll open the class by getting oriented to where the blues scale sits in it and examine different options for playing the I, IV and V7 chords. Then we’ll look at how some of the players who specialized in the tuning, like Furry Lewis, Clifford Gibson and Henry Spaulding played in the tuning. We’ll then look at other possibilities the tuning makes available that are yet to be utilized and conclude with a question-and-answer period.

The class will be recorded and sent to all participants so you’ll be able to review the lesson content. Persons interested in the class who are unable to attend the day it is offered may still purchase it and receive the film of the class, which is sent to all purchasers immediately following the presentation. Cost of the class is $40.00. To sign up, make a payment to my account at paypal.com as per the instructions at https://johnmillerguitar.com/teaching.html . Once I’ve been notified that payment has been made, I’ll send you an invitation. I hope to see you there!

All best,
Johnm

Super Electrical Recordings! / Collection of Blues CDs to pass on - free
« Last post by bungalow bill on April 28, 2024, 10:45:03 AM »
A friend and music collector of all things Blues has a CD collection of thousands and there are hundreds covering the topics of Blues in early periods and some later periods. Some very rare recordings (in the UK). I would be happy to pass on any of these for the cost of postage once I have sorted out their details. At this stage just a question would anyone be interested?

That's a shame, too bad they didn't have connects with RCA or Sony during the mid-'90s when there seemed to be money for this kind of stuff.

Tefteller wanted to do a new T Johnson release and to use 1950s era photos of Tommy which his family has but want unreasonable money for usage. Probably there's not much incentive to release a complete TJ CD in 2024. We gotta make our own.

Agree totally about the Yazoo releases, though I think some tracks have been superseded by tracks on the CDs that accompanied the Blues Images calendars.

Definitely – I've tried each year to update various playlists with those tracks as they come out. Hope Tefteller keeps the CDs coming even though the calendars have stopped.

The guitar playing is real fluent.

Not sure about 1.1  could also be a little more. He sings quite fast.

1.1 "Wake up in the morning, -little woman and- love me little more."

3.1 "Wake up, baby, -and- love me little more."

A SOLO after the 2nd verse?
