Topic: Pre war northern USA music scene

I've been thinking about it lately, and it seems like all the famous musicians from the 20's and 30's were from the south... I was wondering what was the popular music in places like.. I don't know.. Oregon, Idaho, North Dakota, Wisconsin, or the New England region.
Is it just me, or was the recording industry all about southern music?

Absolutely not.  There was popular music, ethnic music, dance bands, folk music, etc,  recorded from all over the US, some by the major labels, some by smaller local and regional labels.  It's just that no one cares about all that stuff, so it almost never gets reissued.  Check out paramountshome.org - there are hints there of the ethnic and dance music from the upper midwest that paramount recorded and issued in addition the blues records that today are the only thing anyone remembers about Paramount.
