Thanks for the tips, Chris. I will give it a re-listen when I'm to my teaching space next week and make changes as appropriate. It is odd that such a long form would lead to such a short rendition.

Now it's important that you understand that there were three things I never wanted to own when I was a kid: a dog, a cane, and a guitar. In my brain, they each meant blindness and helplessness. Seems like every blind blues singer I'd heard about was playing the guitar - Ray Charles, from Brother Ray: Ray Charles' Own Story

All best, John, Hi all,
Bo Carter played "My Baby" out of his favored G6 tuning, DGDGBE. The song incorporates a set piece solo at the end of each stanza, and is a terrifically fun piece to play and hear. The premise of the lyric, that Bo takes his baby to various "stands" where she goes nuts for the proprietors, is pretty darn funny. Bo worked in some great spoken asides, too, over the concluding solo. He had a real zest for novelty material which makes his music in this vein wear well. I take my baby to the candy stand, she got stuck on the candy man I?m talkin' 'bout the little sweet girl of mine I'll take my baby to the candy stand, she got a fool about the candy man I?m talkin' 'bout the little sweet gal of mine (spoken: Yeah!) I take my baby to the peanut stand, she got a fool about the old nut man I?m talkin' 'bout the little sweet girl of mine I?ll take my baby to the peanut stand, she got a fool about the peanut man I?m talkin' 'bout the little sweet babe of mine I take my baby to the banana stand, she got a fool about the banana man I?m talkin' 'bout the little sweet girl of mine I?ll take my baby to the banana stand, she got a fool about the banana man I?m talkin' 'bout the little sweet gal of mine (spoken: Yas, baby) I take my baby to the whiskey stand, she fell on her face about the whiskey man I?m talkin' 'bout that little sweet girl of mine I?ll take my baby to the whiskey stand, she fell out about the whiskey man I?m talkin' 'bout that little girl of mine (spoken: Baby don't get crazy 'bout him. I'm gon' make you some gosh.) I take my baby to the money stand, she fell on her face about the money man I?m talkin' 'bout the little sweet girl of mine I?ll take my baby to the money stand, she fell on her face about the money man I?m talkin' 'bout that little girl of mine (spoken: Baby, don't get crazy about him. I got a few bucks.) All best, Johnm Bo played "Shake 'Em On Down" out of his Half Spanish tuning, DGDGBE. Somewhere on weenie there is a discussion of what Bo is actually singing in the chorus that was not conclusive. I'm 99.9% sure that he sings "shuffle 'em on down" (as Chezztone suggested in that thread). Sometimes you can hear both syllables, although it is always sung quickly, and at other times Bo sings it more as one syllable, i.e., shuff', swallowing the -le,, or singing something that comes out as "shuff' lem on down". "Shuffle 'em on down" makes sense in the context of the set-up line, "Must I keep dealin'", as well.
Iin the third verse, Bo uses a formula that appears in other blues songs: Now there's two big cars rolling side to side You got my good girl, guess you satisfied. For some reason, he sings this as scatisfied. Compare with Frank Stokes in "Sweet to Mama": Lord there?s two bullyin' steamers running along side by side Now you stole my good gal, I guess you?re satisfied Like some other Bo Carter material, this song never really did it for me for a long time, and also like a lot of that other material, I've come to really like it. It's got a really nice guitar part that's laid-back and different, and Bo's vocal is pretty great to. There is one line I'm not certain of, in verse 4. Shake 'Em On Down - Bo Carter DGDGBE tuning (Boy, I was just sittin' here thinkin' Must I keep dealin' or must I shuffle 'em on down) Say, you laying round here, sweet baby, your face full of frowns Must I keep dealin', must I shuffle 'em on down Baby, must I keep dealin' Or must I shuffle 'em on down Baby, I done quit dealin', ooh, I got to shuffle 'em on down Now, here's one thing, sweet baby, I really want you to know You can push, you can pull, don't you tear my clothes Babe, but must I keep dealin' Or must I shuffle 'em on down Baby, I done quit dealin', ooh, I got to shuffle 'em on down Now there's two big cars rolling side an' side You got my good girl, guess you scatisfied Baby, must I keep dealin' Or must I shuffle 'em on down Baby, I done quit dealin', ooh, I got to shuffle 'em on down (Shuffle 'em on down then, boys That's what I'm talkin about Shuffle 'em on down) Now there's a big T for Texas, T for Tennessee T for the girl feelin' care for me Babe, but must I keep dealin' Or must I shuffle 'em on down Baby, I done quit dealin', ooh, I got to shuffle 'em on down Says I went up to the station, looks up on the board It's a good time here, better one round the road Babe, but must I keep dealin' Or must I shuffle 'em on down Baby, I done quit dealin', ooh, I got to shuffle 'em on down edited to pick up corrections from banjochris and dj Hi uncle bud,
I think Bo's signature lick on "Shake 'Em On Down" is one of his best, just mean and nasty. His timing on it is so particular, too. All best, Johnm Hi uncle bud, I've been playing it all weekend. It's so much fun. Thanks banjochris and dj. I made the change.
Here's one that was never really finalized way back when. Bo played "I Want You to Know" out of Half Spanish (DGDGBE) tuning. He later redid the song as "Don't Do It No More", a slightly wilder version, guitar-wise. I think everything is accurate here, but corrections welcome. I Want You To Know - Bo Carter Half Spanish tuning Babe, I want you to know Babe, I want you to know That little you been doin?, Lord Baby, don?t you do it no more Baby, I want you to know Honey, I want you to know That little you been givin?, Lord Baby, don?t you give it no more ?Cause I?m a stranger here, just dropped in your town Ain?t none of these women, Lord, turn me down They cryin', "baby, honey..." Babe, I want you to understand Honey, I want you to understand I don?t mean you no more good now Please get you another man (2 instrumental verses and 1 instrumental bridge) Baby, I want you to know Honey, I want you to know That little you been doin?, Lord Baby, don?t you do it no more Babe, I want you to know Honey, I want you to know That little you been givin?, Lord Baby, don?t you give it no more ?Cause I?m a stranger here, just dropped in your town Ain?t none of these women, Lord, turn me down They cryin', "baby, honey..." Babe, I want you to understand Honey, I want you to understand I don?t mean you no more good now Please get you another man Like I said above, Bo later redid "I Want You to Know" (1931) as "Don't Do It No More" in 1935. Same song with a guitar part that Bo plays with a bit more edge, particularly in the solo. I could use some help in the third verse. Not sure if the phrase in square brackets is correct. File attached for reference.
Don't Do It No More - Bo Carter Half Spanish tuning (DGDGBE) Honey, I want you to know Honey, I want you to know That little you been doin?, Lord Baby, don?t you do it no more Babe, I want you to know Sweet girl, I want you to know That little you been givin?, Lord Baby, don?t you give it no more I got so many women, don't know who I love Gang around me like the angels above They cryin', "baby, honey..." Babe, I want you to understand Honey, I want you to understand I don?t mean you no more good now Please get you another man (2 instrumental verses and 1 instrumental bridge) Honey, I want you to know Honey, I want you to know That little you been doin?, Lord Baby, don?t you do it no more Honey, I want you to know Honey, I want you to know That little you been givin?, Lord Baby, don?t you give it no more I'm going out east for a change So many women, they addle my brains They cryin', "baby, honey..." Baby, I want you to understand Baby, I want you to understand I don?t mean you no more good now Please get you another man edited to add correction from banjochris [attachment deleted by admin] Pretty sure it's "the angels above," but as I remember he stumbles a bit as he sings it.
Chris Here's one that I have transcribed years ago. Have't checked it with the recording before posting, but at least the lyrics make sense (which they don't always seem to do when I transcribe them).
Don't Mash My Digger So Deep Baby if you don't like my peaches, baby please don't ya touch my tree Baby if you don't love my peaches, baby please don't touch my tree And if you don't want me to have your potatoes, don't mash my digger down so deep Say's when I get to use my digger, I use it in different ways, I dig potatoes for these women, both night and day Baby and if you don't love my peaches, baby please don't touch my tree And if you don't want me to have your potatoes, don't mash my digger down so deep Says when I get to use my digger, I use it just like I should, The women all cryin': "Your old digger, ya know, it digs and feels so good!" Baby and if you don't love my peaches, baby please don't touch my tree And if you don't want me to have your potatoes, don't mash my digger down so deep SOLO Says when I get to use my digger, I use the side and up and down, I can dig your potatoes better than any man in this town And if you don't love my peaches, baby please don't touch my tree Iif you don't want me to have your potatoes, don't mash my digger down so deep Sometimes it takes three inches to dig for 'tatoes, sometimes it takes four, When I find 'em deep, you know, I mash it down some more Baby and if you don't love my peaches, baby please don't touch my tree And if you don't want me to have your potatoes, don't mash my digger down so deep Here's another one from my hard-drive:
All Around Man Now I ain't no butcher, no butcher's son, I can do your cuttin' 'til the butcher man comes 'Cause I'm a all-around man, oh I'm a all-around man, I mean I'm a all-around man, I can do most anything that comes my hand Now I ain't no plumber, no plumber's son, I can do your screwin' till the plumber man comes 'Cause I'm a all-around man, oh I'm a all-around man, I mean I'm a all-around man, I can do most anything that comes my hand Now I ain't no miller, no miller's son, I can do your grindin' 'til the miller man comes 'Cause I'm a all-around man, oh I'm a all-around man, I mean I'm a all-around man, I can do most anything that comes my hand Spoken: Oh baby you know I?m an all-around man Now I ain't no milkman, no milkman's son, I can pull your titties 'til the milkman comes 'Cause I'm a all-around man, oh I'm a all-around man, I mean I'm a all-around man, I can do most anything that comes my hand Now I ain't no spring-man, no spring-man's son, I can bounce your springs 'til the spring-man comes 'Cause I'm a all-around man, oh I'm a all-around man, I mean I'm a all-around man, I can do most anything that comes my hand Now I ain't no auger-man, no auger-man's son, I can bore your hole 'til the auger-man comes 'Cause I'm a all-around man, oh I'm a all-around man, I mean I'm a all-around man, I can do most anything that comes my hand Modified to include banjochris' correction. Mr Mando -- one small correction from memory on All Around Man, in the last verse, I believe it's BORE your hole instead of blow!
