New Yorker article on Art Rosenbaum / Dust-to-Digital
« on: April 29, 2008, 07:20:57 AM »
For those who haven't seen word of this elsewhere, there is a substantial (long) article in the April 28 issue of the New Yorker about Art Rosenbaum, Dust-to-Digital's Lance Ledbetter (of Goodbye, Babylon fame ) and numerous people of interest to Weenies (Joe Bussard, Cora Mae Bryant etc etc). I enjoyed reading it last night as I knew relatively little about Rosenbaum and his field recordings.

You can see some photos here: http://www.newyorker.com/online/2008/04/28/slideshow_080428_bilger/?slide=1&run=true&start=6#showHeader

You can also listen to a podcast interview here (haven't listened yet myself):

Hi Bald Melon,
Nope, that's a five-string banjo.  There are only four tuners in the head and you can see the fifth string peg half-way up the neck.
All best,
Johnm

Hi John - There's a second photo of Rosenbaum where he is indeed holding a six-string banjo here: http://www.newyorker.com/online/2008/04/28/slideshow_080428_bilger/?slide=7#showHeader

Only proving he's a man of discerning taste.

Well, that is something!  It appears to be fretless, too, and I thought I had the only fretless banjo-guitar.  With friction pegs, too, I wouldn't have to tune that one.
All best,
Johnm

Those Dust-To-Digital guys really make some fine releases. Hasn't got around to check out that Rosenbaum yet. Another great one:

There's a volume two coming up of Rosenbaum recordings too:

Y'all have got to read the article! I finally did, today. I won't spoil it by giving any quotes here, but you'll love it.
