Hi Wax: Thanks for the reply. I think your choice is a very good one with solid reasoning behind it. When trying to understand some of the problematic lines we encounter, I often try to put myself in the place of the artist, if only to get a better idea of how the circumstances under which a song was sung might affect the lyrics--that is, how the pressures of recording in the 20s and 30s when resources and time constraints when making a recording were different from entertaining in a live setting when things were somewhat looser.
