I made my first banjo out of a guitar neck and a tin can mama used to make biscuits in. And the first thing I learnt on that was Old John Booker - You Call That Gone. - Gus Cannon, Broadcasting the Blues, Document Records

You could pick a voice out and pretty much tell who it was, but we never did know Uncle Dave Macon was a white man until way years later. Always thought he was black; everybody did around there. - John Jackson, Smithsonian Folkways Magazine
?I love the music business, but it sucks. The only thing I can liken it to is the drug business. Everybody?s out to get you, no one?s legit, and the only people getting paid are at the top.? Syl Johnson
Name of this is "Vitamin A Blues". I'm very young, I don't need no vitamins. - Big Joe Williams in 1965, These Are My Blues, Testament Records

Two great Furry Lewis quotes in a row. What are you reading, uncle bud?
Two great Furry Lewis quotes in a row. What are you reading, uncle bud? I've been fooling around with a bunch of Furry Lewis songs lately, so I've also been poking around in my CDs and videos. The first quote comes from the brief liner notes to the Fat Possum release, Good Morning Judge and is unattributed and quite possibly apocryphal, though sounds rather like Furry. The second one is in the booklet for the DVD Legends of Country Blues Guitar Vol 3 - Blues Up the Country, which quotes Furry's line about his first guitar, built at around age 12, from Margaret McKee and Fred Chisenhall's Beale Black & Blue: Life and Music on Black America?s Main Street. Which I have not read myself. I really liked it, but I don't ever want to do it again. - Mississippi John Hurt, after a ride through Manhattan on the back of Patrick Sky's motorcycle, liner notes to Complete Studio Recordings
When your pal buys your gal a Coca-Cola, you can bet your life he's playing her Victrola. - Do It Right, Pigmeat Pete and Catjuice Charlie
You can jive me, baby, but I don't believe a thing you say
You just a confidencin' woman and wants to have your way-"Jive Me Blues", Clifford Gibson Apropos of discussions elsewhere, here's a guy who'd obviously been there, done that, got the tee-shirt and gone on to do something else:
As Chris Mercer, one-time sax player with John Mayall's Bluesbreakers told Melody Maker in November 1968: 'Blues fans are just thick. You can play them any old rubbish and they'll cheer. It doesn't matter how badly you play because blues fans, who are supposed to he so intelligent, will accept anything, however abysmal' - quoted by the mysterious Neville Wiggins, The History of Rock Volume 5 Issue 56 (Stepping Out), 1983, p.1101-1103 Actually he was/maybe still is a very good sax player. There's no way in the world I can feel the same blues the way I used to. When I play in Chicago, I'm playing up-to-date, not the blues I was born with. People should hear the pure blues - the blues we used to have when we had no money.
Muddy Waters The British ballads became a new kind of form in their hand. And out of them came the blues, a new kind of song of commentary and satire, a song form which, after all, has become the main musical form of the whole human species.
Alan Lomax My songs, they have just the one chord, there's none of that fancy stuff you hear now, with lots of chords in one song. If I find another chord,
I leave it for another song. - Junior Kimbrough
