I closed my sets with his "I hate to leave you with tears in my eyes " for years. Love that prestige record!

Just got the sad news (via an employer of one of his sons) that Robert Curtis Smith passed on "a few weeks ago" ...
... anyone can confirm this (never saw any obit anywhere) ?!?

Sad to hear this if this is so. A quite recent article on Mr.Smith here on tdblues.com:

No Obit in the Clarksdale Press register.
If this is true its really a tragedy that he lived in obscurity all these years. It makes me wonder wtf is the matter with all of us that he was still alive and we had no clue!

Of course, it's possible he did not want to be reminded of his past as a blues musician, since he left that behind to follow a religious life.

And as far as that goes, some Blues fans lose interest in their heroes when they play religious music.
All best,

He has seemingly died recently, according to Stephan Wirtz.

The songs of R.C.Smith have been huge favourites of mine for a lot of years. I managed to get a copy of the Prestige album from a dealer on eBay about 10 years ago. I did read somewhere that he had been tracked down maybe 5 or 6 years ago and had played- albeit reluctantly at the Sunflower festival. Apparently he was very uncomfortable doing so as he hadn't played for a lot of years since joining the church.  A great loss if he has died .
