Performances by Married Couples
« on: November 17, 2019, 12:22:41 PM »
Hi all,
I've noticed in recent years that there have been a lot of really strong performances by married couples recorded, and thought it might be interesting to have a thread devoted to such performances, picking up the lyrics as we go (more or less).  Just to get the ball rolling, here are a couple of such performances.  First, from Boyd and Ruth May Rivers, "I Done Died One Time":

I done died one time, ain't gon' die no more
I done died one time, ain't gon' die no more
I done died one time, ain't gon' die no more
Ain't that good news, oh Lordy, ain't that good news?

Just one thing I know, sure been born again
Just one thing I know, sure been born again
Just one thing I know, sure been born again
Ain't that good news, oh Lordy, ain't that good news?

I'm so glad, Lord, got my religion in time
I'm so glad, Lord, got my religion in time
I'm so glad, Lord, got my religion in time
Ain't that good news, oh Lordy, ain't that good news?

Just one thing I know, sure been born again
Just one thing I know, sure been born again
Just one thing I know, sure been born again
Ain't that good news, oh Lordy, ain't that good news?

Oh, when I get to Heaven, children, ain't that good news?
Gonna set right down, ain't that good news?
And King Jesus, ain't that good news?
Give me starry crown, ain't that good news?
No more singin', ain't that good news?
No more cryin', ain't that good news?
Every day, ain't that good news?
Will be Sunday, ain't that good news?
Oh Lord, ain't that good news?
Oh Jesus, ain't that good news?
Oh Jesus, ain't that good news?
You been mighty good, ain't that good news?
You ain't a-been good, ain't that good news?
Early in the mornin', ain't that good news?
Late at night, ain't that good news?
We'll call King Jesus, ain't that good news?
And He make it right, ain't that good news?
Oh Lord, well, ain't that good news?
Oh Jesus, ain't that good news?
Oh Jesus, ain't that good news?
Well some got religion, ain't that good news?
Well, some on a Monday, ain't that good news?
Well, some on a Tuesday, ain't that good news?
Well, some on a Wednesday, ain't that good news?
Well, some on a Thursday, ain't that good news?
Well, some on a Friday, ain't that good news?
Well, some on a Saturday, ain't that good news?
Well, some on a Friday, ain't that good news?
Oh, Saturday, ain't that good news?
Well, He put it right, ain't that good news?
Oh, Jesus, ain't that good news?
Oh Lord, ain't that good news?
Well, some prays Sunday, ain't that good news?
He'll put it right, ain't that good news?
In my feeling, ain't that good news?
Oh, Jesus, ain't that good news?
Oh Lord, ain't that good news?
He sure been good, ain't that good news?
You been mighty good, ain't that good news?
Sure been good, Jesus, ain't that good news?
One of these days, ain't that good news?
Gonna see my mother, ain't that good news?
See my father, ain't that good news?
All my loved ones, ain't that good news?
Been gone so long, ain't that good news?
Oh Lord, ain't that good news?
Oh Lord, ain't that good news?
You been mighty good, ain't that good news?
Ain't He been good to you, ain't that good news?
Oh Lord, you been mighty good

From Mary Williams and Big Joe Williams, here is "Oakland Blues":

INTRO

Good morning, blues, good morning, blues, tell me, how do you do?
I had so much trouble in Oakland, I taken trouble to be my pillow

My daddy had sixty days in jail, baby, I really couldn't sleep at night
And my daddy had so much trouble in jail, baby, I really couldn't sleep at night
I'm gon' write my man a letter, honey, I'm gon' mail it in the air

I'm goin' back to New Orleans, baby, goin' back down Rampart Street
Say I'm goin' back to New Orleans, baby, goin' back down Rampart Street
I'm goin' down Canal Street, baby, (spoken: What you gonna do down there?), I'm goin' to make Algiers to be my home

I'm gon' tell all you womens in California, you better pin your man to your side
'Cause if he flags my train, baby, sure gon' let him ride

Goin' out ridin', tell Mr. Tom Thomas, gon' take me to the bus station
'Cause I'm gonna buy my fare, get my man out of San Quentin, baby
I'm gon' take the airplane back to New Orleans

Good-bye, Chilli, hope I see you again
I know the best of friends sure got to part sometime
But tell me, baby, what in the world you have on your mind?
I said, throw your arms around me, daddy, like a circle around the sun

From Fred and Annie Mae McDowell, here is "It's A Blessing":

Anyone have other favorite performances by married couples to post here?

All best,
Johnm

Willie McTell recorded several songs with his wife, Kate. I particularly like "I Got Religion, I'm So Glad."

Here is an obscure one from Carolina way; Louis and Audrey Stamey "The Cherokee Carolina Sweethearts". They performed as an electric guitar instrumental duo at many festivals and fiddlers conventions in Western Carolina during the late 1960s.

The few citations I found all say something like "Willie B. Harris, supposedly/allegedly/possibly Blind Willie Johnson's first wife."

They were brother and sister, Scratchy! (There are lots of brother acts but not too many brother and sister ones, I don't think.)

Hi all,
Here's one from Lottie Kate Bunkley and Jim Bunkley--"Black Gal", recorded by George Mitchell:

INTRO

He crazy 'bout you, black gal
He crazy 'bout you, black gal, ought to be a fool about me

Well, I love you, dear, I love you mighty, within' that your pajamas was just a little bit close to my nightie
My baby brother crazy 'bout you, black gal, ought to be a fool about me
He's crazy 'bout you, black gal, you ought to be a fool about me

GUITAR INTERLUDE
He crazy 'bout you, black gal, ought to be fool about me
Crazy 'bout you, black gal, ought to be a fool about me

If you're goin' to be the clothespin, baby, I wants to be your line, we would swing out together, oh boy, won't that be fine
He crazy 'bout you, black gal, you ought to be a fool about me
He crazy 'bout you, black gal, you ought to be a fool about me

GUITAR INTERLUDE
He crazy 'bout you, black gal, you ought to be a fool about me
Crazy 'bout you, black gal, you ought to be a fool about me

When he left me this mornin', when the clock was stikin' four, when he stepped out, those blues stepped in my door
My baby's runnin' crazy 'bout you, black gal, you ought to be a fool about me
He crazy 'bout you, black gal, you ought to be a fool about me

All best,
Johnm

A charming track by Little Brother Montgomery featuring vocals by his wife Jan. Recorded in 1979 and taken from the Earwig release Little Brother Montgomery At Home. I can feel the love in this one.
